Description
This collection consists of six boxes (3 linear ft.) of general information, scrapbooks, yearbooks & other school publications of the San Joaquin General Hospital School of Nursing, Stockton (Calif.). These materials date from 1930 through 1979, but focus principally on the years 1950-1965.
Background
The first hospital buildings at French Camp, San Joaquin County, were completed in 1895; these constituted third county hospital, but first on this site. School of Nursing established in 1906 and was first accredited when State of California began accreditation (1914). Faculty members important in creation of this collection include Leolla B. Allen, Director of Nursing (1940-1960) and Ethel Wright Guichou. Students lived in Lucerna Hall, a two story stucco building on the hospital grounds. A reference library was located on second floor of Lucerna Hall. During World War II school was one of those chosen to train nurses under Cadet Nurse Program. The School began accepting male candidates in 1950. By 1960 SJGH School of Nursing had graduated over 500 nurses. The School was subsequently taken over by San Joaquin Delta Community College, Stockton (1963).
