Background
William Haas was born in Reckendorf, Bavaria and emigrated to the United States at 14 with his brother, Abraham. They joined their brothers, Jacob and Sam, and older cousins, Charles, Samuel, and Kalman Haas, in establishing a grocery business on the newly expanding west coast. William associated with the firm of Loupe & Haas which later became the Haas Bros, a company in which William was described as the "moving spirit" (Obituary, "The Grocer" 1916). In 1880 William married Bertha Greenebaum, the daughter of one of his business associates.
