Biography Series 1

Scope and Contents note

Materials relating to Becking’s personal life cover Becking’s employment, family, spirituality and philosophy. A number of documents pertaining to employment reveal professional tension with some colleagues.
Family materials include Christmas letters from the late 1990s and early 2000s, and publications and correspondence of Becking’s family members. Of note is correspondence between Becking and his brother regarding their joint Java egg collection and some journals containing information provided by their colleague/mentor, zoologist Max Bartels. The Becking Java egg collection is now housed in the Zoological Museum University of Amsterdam, The Netherlands.
Programs and notes from several talks at the Humboldt Unitarian Fellowship present Becking’s spiritual perspective on topics such as the Headwaters controversy, humans and their relationships to plants, differences between childhood times and current times, “ecoactivism”, “ecocide”, salmon, the legal standing of trees, and other topics.
The Biography series also includes documentation of two instances in which Becking defended his professional integrity to institutional authorities:
Becking Fire/Professional Competency Case: In the 1970s, Becking was implicated as the responsible party for a fire that started in Freshwater Forest after Becking and his students had been burning test plots. The materials related to this incident include Becking’s detailed account of the events of the fire and how it was responded to, as well as photographs of the plots and burned areas.
PFR license case: In the 1990s a complaint was filed against Becking to the Professional Forester Registration (PFR), and this organization disciplined Becking with a “Private Letter of Reprimand”. The complaint was filed with regards to Becking’s declaration in a lawsuit filed by a Del Norte County landowner against a neighbor, claiming that they had suffered personal injuries from spraying of Garlon, an herbicide. Becking’s declaration was in support of the effort to stop additional herbicide spraying. The material in these folders includes Becking’s declaration and correspondence regarding the complaint, disciplinary action taken against Becking by the RPF, and Becking’s original declaration. The correspondence shows that Becking himself publicized the matter even though the PFR’s letter was private.

National Science Foundation (NSF)

Scope and Contents note

Data, photographs, negatives, codes, computer programming information, maps, report drafts, related writings, and publications, all pertaining to three National Science Foundation (NSF) grants Becking received for research on Redwood Forest plant communities. Materials from Becking’s 1962 regeneration survey of the Bull Creek watershed for the State of California’s Division of Beaches and Parks is also included due to its relatedness to Becking’s NSF research.
The three NSF grants were awarded between the late 1960s and 1971. They funded Becking’s research on Redwood Forest plant communities, the effects of the 1964 flood on redwood vegetation, and the conditions of natural redwood regeneration. The research was conducted primarily in Humboldt Redwood State Park, but also occurred in redwood regions within their California distribution range. The three grants were connected, as Becking described: GB 4690 “extends the research findings of the previously published Final Report of NSF Grant GB# 3346, published January 15, 1967. It further summarizes research still in progress under the NSF Grant GB # 6310 which was awarded to the Redwood Research Institute, Inc., Arcata, California on May 15, 1967”.
A summary of objectives of NSF Grants 3468, 4690, and 6310, based on descriptions in final reports, is as follows: Redwood Forest Plant Communities – 1) “To provide comprehensive descriptions of the plant communities in the redwood forests of Northern California including a vegetational classification which can serve as a reference frame work for future vegetational research.”, 2) “To provide computer analysis of phytosociological inventory records of the Redwood Forest Communities.”, 3) “To correlate vegetational patterns with environmental factors including soil, climate, topography, flooding, biotic factors, and human influences (logging, fire) and to assess these interrelationships.” Floods and Redwood/Riparian Vegetation – 1) “To study the December, 1964 flood impact upon redwood vegetation and to monitor the flood effects with the progression of time. This includes the measurement of temperatures, precipitation and soil moisture trends per month, and the continuous reinventory of redwood regeneration ring plots in the forest environment.”, 2)“To study the riparian vegetation and its effects upon the floods and the ecological significance of riparian vegetation in flood protection., 3) “To study the ecology and change in environment of the riparian plant communities in relation to flooding, silt deposition, and recurrence of flooding. To establish permanent reference plots to study successional trends in vegetation, changes in environmental conditions, and their effect upon flood height and frequency.” Redwood Regeneration – 1) “To study the natural regeneration of the redwood forests by permanent seedling plots. To measure variation in the most important ecological variables such as temperature, light intensity, soil moisture, and soil pH, and to determine the ecological significance of these factors upon redwood seedling development and survival.”

Plenturung

Scope and Contents note

Correspondence, notes, grant proposals, private contracts, comments on THPs, publications, and workshop materials pertaining to a forestry approach that Becking advocated throughout his career, called “Plenturung”. Becking described Plenturung as a “unique forest management system to maintain constantly a dynamic all-aged stand structure while periodically harvesting timber at controlled monitored sustainable levels.” and a “very old system dating from the medieval coppice forests. It consists of timber harvest without clearing the land, only trees cut which were needed and the rest of the forest was left. Individual tree selection system. Gradually the uneven-aged management system has been evolved by practice of local small forest owners and farm foresters. Aim is now ultimately toward a free, elastic type of management with the basic ideas of selection forest and stand improvement”.
Becking worked some with the Mendocino Real-Wood Co-op, consulted for private property owners, commented on THPs and forestry practices, and taught public workshops about Plenturung. In the 1990s, Becking was active in advocating that Plenturung forestry techniques be applied to the Jackson State Demonstration Forest (JSDF) and other properties in Mendocino County (including the Little River Airport property).

Logging History

Scope and Contents note

Correspondence, photographs, slides, interview notes, and documents Becking gathered for a 1968 grant he received from the Humboldt State College Foundation. The funding was for collecting images and information regarding the history of Redwood logging in the Humboldt County region. Also included is a set of photos Becking collected in 1954 of Allis-Chambers diesel crawler tractors from the manufacturer, Humboldt State College school forest photos apparently depicting early logging there, and materials relating to the history of reforestation in Humboldt County.
Many documents are specific to Humboldt County, including:
  1. "A History of the Plywood Industry in Humboldt County" by Walt Noah (1958).
  2. “First Evidence of Use of Earth mounds in the Earliest Redwood Logging in Humboldt County, California” by Rudolf W. Becking and Joedy Coletti (unpublished manuscript and related correspondence, 1972)
  3. an article in Western Conservation Journal’s September-October 1953 issue entitled “Humboldt’s Forest Future” (Box 18, Folder 18)
  4. an unidentified article entitled “Eureka Redwood Lumber Company” (Box 18, Folder 18)
  5. “Forestry: What it Means” by Donald Bruce, copy provided “compliments of the Humboldt Redwood Reforestation Association”. (Box 18, Folder 18).
  6. “Clean Logging in the Redwoods” by Eugene A. Hofsted, Forester, Arcata Redwood Company, 1961, (Box 18, Folder 29).

Tallest Trees

Scope and Contents note

Correspondence, data, notes, and publications related to height-record-breaking trees of different species throughout the world. Of particular note is a redwood tree in Dyerville that Becking measured and declared was taller than the record at the time. After remeasurement, however, Becking determined that he had made an error the first time and that the tree was shorter than the record holder after all. This story got political and press attention.

Ring-O-Grams

Scope and Contents note

Data from Becking’s “Ring-O-Gram” analyses, collection permit applications, and correspondence including Becking’s communication with CalTrans (regarding data collection from “fallen giant” trees). Ring-O-Grams are the graphical representations of cross-sections of fallen trees. Tree rings, rot, fire scars, and other data are represented on a data sheet to visually record the information. It is unclear whether this method was an innovation of Becking’s. Tree genera covered include Abies, Chamaecyparis, Cryptomeria, Pinus, Pseudotsuga, Sequoia, Tsuga, Thuja, Cryptomeria, and more.

Botanical Studies

Scope and Contents note

Becking’s botanical work ranged from determining taxonomic differences between individual plant species (such as Hastingsia, Oxalis, Asarum and Salix species) to classifying and describing entire plant communities. Phytosociology, a method of plant community classification originating from J. Braun-Blanquet’s Zurich-Montpellier school, was central to Becking’s approach to plant and ecosystem science. This approach, commonly practiced in Europe, has had significant criticism in the United States and Becking was one of the strongest advocates for its practice within the US in his time. Becking also studied various aspects of serpentine-related flora, primarily in the Klamath-Siskiyou region of Northeastern California and Southern Oregon. Materials relating to these studies can be found in the sub-subseries Darlingtonia Bogs, Hastingsia and Serpentine Floras.
Note to researchers: Becking studied different plants at the same time and sometimes from similar places, so researchers interested in a particular plant or sub-subseries should scan the other sub-subseries to find additional content about their topic of interest. For example, there are scattered materials related to Asarum with the sub-subseries Hastingsia, and vice versa, due to Becking having researched these two plants in similar areas at similar times and occasionally kept his notes together about the two.

Phytosociology

Scope and Contents note

Phytosociological relevés/synthesis tables, technical information relating to the computer programs used to generate relevés/synthesis tables, correspondence, manuscripts and other writings, and materials from Becking’s trips and activities relating to the International Association of Phytosociology. Of note is a description of the codes and acronyms that Becking developed for his synthesis tables (RWB handout #141 for NRPI 420). Please note that phytosociological data and information can be found throughout the Becking collection, often as a part of a research project of a specific plant community or place.

Sand Dunes

Scope and Contents note

Correspondence, permit applications, work related to Becking’s unfinished manuscript Sand Dune Flora, data, and other materials. Becking studied the plant communities of the Sand Dunes in Humboldt County for many years, including conducting phytosociological relevés. He studied sand dune formation, dune restoration, control of non-native species, native plant communities, and impacts from Off-Road Vehicles and other activities. Becking began writing an illustrated Sand Dune and Marsh flora in the 1990s, similar in concept and format to Pocket Flora of the Redwood Forest. He was also interested in birds in the Sand Dunes, and at one point he approached the managers of the Lanphere Christenson Dunes about conducting an avian study in the preserve. This proposal was abandoned due to concern about how his going off trail would negatively impact the dune flora. Some materials relating to salt marshes are also included.

Hastingsia

Scope and Contents note

Gray literature, handwritten notes by Becking regarding Hastingsia chromosomes, pollen, collections at various herbariums, bulb plantings at HSU greenhouse, data analysis (computer printouts from vegetation analysis software), material related to a USFS contract for an ecological investigation of Erigeron and Schoenolirion (ecology and distribution of both genera), drafts of manuscripts, and correspondence. Also included are Becking's Hastingsia illustrations and correspondence with editors of "Flora of North America" about their possible inclusion of them into their book (1998), correspondence between Becking and Kenton Chambers of Oregon State University regarding comments on Flora North Americana Project (2000), and correspondence between Donald Heinze and Becking regarding Heinze's request for illustrations for his book "Plants of the Siskiyou Mountains and Valleys" (2001).
Of special note: Becking published a description of a new species (Hastingsia atropurpurea) in 1986 in the botanical journal "Madroño". In 1997, botanists F.A. Lang and P.F. Zika published a paper in "Madroño" about their conclusions that Hastingsia atropurpurea was not a distinct species from Hastingsia bracteosa as Becking had proposed. At around the same time, Becking had developed a manuscript entitled "Annotations to Hastingsia (Liliaceae) nomenclature" which was submitted to "Madroño" as well. Becking’s manuscript was rejected by "Madroño" editors and reviewers due to the preferred conclusion of Lang and Zika, and there is significant correspondence related to this controversy.

Pocket Flora

Scope and Contents note

Materials from Becking’s "Pocket Flora of the Redwood Forest" (PFRF) manuscript (published by Island Press in 1982), an updated version of the manuscript Becking sought publication of in the 1990s, and an unfinished manuscript Becking referred to as “Sand Dune Flora”. Materials include illustrations, notes, worksheets and text drafts for plant families included in PFRF (and possibly intended for the Sand Dune text), illustrations, negatives and plates, floral diagrams, and correspondence with Island Press regarding PFRF publication and sales. Becking employed students to help him prepare the PFRF text, and some communications with them are also included.
"Pocket Flora of the Redwood Forest" featured Becking’s original botanical illustrations and keys to the plants commonly found in Redwood Forests. Island Press eventually stopped printing this title. However, starting in the late 1990s, Becking began updating the book and looking for a publisher to reprint it. He was not successful in finding a publisher and appears to have been continuing to work on this project at the end of his life.
Becking also worked on a "Sand Dune Flora" with the same format he used for PFRF. Becking kept many of the documents and materials for the Sand Dune flora together with his Redwood flora materials.
Some materials came to the collection later than the rest. Those delivered to the library after Becking’s death included quantities of loose and unsorted materials. It is recommended that researchers investigate these folders of unsorted loose materials.
There are some items included in this subseries that have a broader scope than the Redwood or Sand Dune floras, including an inventory of Becking’s botanical drawings which includes other habitats such as Serpentine.

Soils

Scope and Contents note

Contents of 15 binders of soil profiles Becking called “sputograms”, collected from his vegetation plots. Twelve of the binders were labeled 1-13 (Binder 2 was not found). Also included are materials specific to soils and soil science that were found loose throughout the collection, (some pertaining to northern California and to Humboldt County), including Becking’s manuscript on the sputogram technique.
Becking made sputograms by mixing a small sample of soil with his own saliva and mounting it onto an absorbant paper. He did this for each soil horizon, resulting in a complete soil profile for a given plot. Once the paper had dried thoroughly, he mounted the profile onto a backing paper and made notes about the site and the soil. Corresponding vegetation plot numbers are located on each individual sputogram, so correlating this soil profile data with related data from specific plots is theoretically possible.
Many of the vegetation plots were related to National Science Foundation grants Becking received in the 1960s for research on Redwoods. Also included are sputograms from Indonesia, Canada, and other places.
Researchers should note that Becking’s sputograms are integrated into Becking’s work and can be found throughout the collection. In general, folders elsewhere in the collection containing sputograms can be identified by the term “includes soil profiles” included in the folder heading.

Great Smoky Mountains

Scope and Contents note

Correspondence, reports, data, field maps, and substantial literature associated with Becking’s research in the Great Smoky Mountains. Includes some unrelated documents (primarily from the International Association for Vegetation Science field trip of 1976) that were not separated because Becking kept them with his Smoky Mountain materials.
Becking summarized his research in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park this way: “In 1948, Dr. Robert H. Whittaker established the first series of 13 vegetation plots in different plant communities as a part of a survey of insect communities. In 1955, these research plots formed the basis for the publication of a classification of vegetation patterns of the Smoky Mountains [published by Whittaker in 1956]. Between 1959 to 1962 [Whittaker and Becking] expanded this vegetation research and reinventoried these research plots for biomass productivity."
In 1976 Becking was funded by the Oak Ridge National Laboratory to resurvey the Whittaker/Becking plots in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park as well as to establish permanent markers for them so that they could continue to be reinventoried in the future. Becking wrote that the objectives of this study were:
  1. “To summarize changes in southern forests since earlier [studies by Whittaker and Becking].
  2. To project vegetational impacts to be anticipated from climatic change (including 1° to 5° C warming over the next century).
  3. To advise [Oak Ridge National Laboratory] and cooperating organizations on feasible ways to predict and monitor ecosystem changes in forests.”

Marbled Murrelet

Scope and Contents note

Correspondence, original data and writing, and publications. Original data relates to measurements of preserved Murrelet skins from museum collections throughout the west, identified Murrelet nest locations, found Murrelet eggs and egg shells, found live juvenile Murrelets and accounts of their care and survival, Murrelet critical habitat characteristics, and other topics. Correspondence includes information queries about methods for surveying Murrelets. Also included are Becking’s original illustrations of his live observations, museum specimens, nest maps and habitat structure diagrams.
Becking identified himself as an amateur ornithologist in his pursuits of Marbled Murrelet-related research. He studied juvenile states and breeding biology of Marbled Murrelet, the genus Brachyramphus, and (in his words): “if there are racial differences in the marbled murrelet”. Becking studied Murrelets throughout the world, including Japan and the USSR.
Some content does not relate directly to Marbled Murrelets, such as correspondence about placing Becking’s egg collection from Java in a repository, Becking’s early studies of eggs, nests and birds of Indonesia, a project in which Becking developed a standardized way to measure eggs without damaging them, and a project in which Becking (in his words): “developed and standardized a unique measuring system of bird nests with a full description of nest materials”. This material was not separated because Becking kept it with his work on Marbled Murrelets.

Project Egg

Scope and Contents note

Becking’s work to develop a standardized formula for measuring egg dimensions, correspondence with oologists, literature reprints, etc. It also includes Becking’s write up summarizing the (in his words): “egg dimension and shape project”.
Becking researched what kind of technology would allow the most precise measurements of eggs without damaging them. Becking sought to develop a standardized formula for quantifying egg size and shape so that he could safely increase access to old and fragile eggs in museums. He measured and described eggs to detect variation in egg size and color within a clutch.

Activism and Civic Involvement Series 3

Scope and Contents note

Becking consistently sought information about political issues that were important to him, and worked to influence environmental policy and management. Becking’s efforts were focused on the Northwestern California region, but extended at times to broader policy issues. Becking studied specific issues in depth, and expressed his opinions about them through letter writing and participation in campaigns. He advocated for infrastructure development for bicycling and public transportation in Arcata and on the HSU campus. He supported environmental conservation through the establishment and later expansion of Redwood National Park, and through improved regulation of the timber industry. He kept informed of and commented on factors effecting water quality in Humboldt Bay.

Arcata

Scope and Contents note

Materials from Becking’s efforts to stay informed of and contribute to the management of the city of Arcata, California. In 1972, Becking was elected onto the Arcata City Council. Throughout his years as a resident of the city, Becking was active in municipal environmental issues, including management of the Arcata Community Forest and of city waste.

Transportation

Scope and Contents note

Correspondence, public comments, gray literature and press coverage of various transportation issues in Arcata and the surrounding area, including the Arcata Freeway project, the Arcata Bike Master Plan, HSU Parking, and related topics. Becking was concerned about the effects of transportation planning on ecological factors such as native vs. nonnative landscaping, use of herbicides, wildlife passage including fisheries passage in stream crossings, and how transportation planning effects safety for alternative modes of transportation such as walking and biking. Becking’s work with the Bike Master Plan led to smaller communities across the country contacting him to gather information about how to create a similar plan for their communities. He advocated for mass transit development and improvement instead of freeway improvement. Also included are materials about the HSU general plan and Becking’s opposition and concerns about the construction of the Jolly Giant dormitory structure. He often addressed this and campus parking issues together.

Wastewater

Scope and Contents note

Correspondence, clippings, planning documents, and literature pertaining to wastewater reclamation science and Arcata and Eureka’s wastewater treatment facilities. In the 1970s, pollution into Humboldt Bay from Arcata/Eureka sewage was detected and the cities both began developing plans to redesign their wastewater treatment systems. Becking actively supported the idea of developing a wastewater recycling facility using marsh plant communities to biologically treat Arcata’s wastewater. Both scientific and political discussion is represented.

Solid Waste

Scope and Contents note

Information about and data from Becking’s 1972 volunteer-run survey of Arcata garbage, as well as publications, correspondence, notes, and a small amount of photographs pertaining to solid waste management and recycling municipal waste. In Becking’s words, volunteers for the Arcata garbage survey determined the “% composition and weight of glass, aluminum, other metals, newspaper, other paper, plastic, raw garbage, and miscellaneous materials.” Becking supported the development of the Arcata Recycling Center, and his comments to the city in 1997 when the center was at risk of closure are included.

Forest Management

Scope and Contents note

City documents, correspondence, clippings, and Becking’s comments on the management of Arcata city forests. Becking expressed his concerns and ideas to the City of Arcata’s Forest Management Advisory Committee, to the City Forester (including Gary Miller during his time as Forester) and in local publications. He was critical of cruise methodology, the public participation process, spending of timber revenues, accounting and documentation, and stand management strategies. Becking promoted Plenturung forest management being applied to Arcata city forests, and he applied for the position of city forester in 1984. Includes coverage of the potential acquisition of the McDowell property adjacent to the Arcata Community Forest in the 1990s, a Christmas Tree Farm Project in the 1980s, a Nonindustrial Timber Management Plan (NTMP) that was proposed in 1999, and the controversial Sunnybrae Timber Harvest Plan of Sierra Pacific Industries that an organization led by Mark Lovelace called the Sunnybrae Arcata Neighborhood Association (SANA) actively opposed in the 2000s.

Humboldt Bay

Scope and Contents note

Materials regarding Proposition 20 of 1972 (a controversial “Coastal Initiative” that Becking supported for its preservation measures), proposed Off Road Vehicle (ORV) parks on the North Spit/Samoa Peninsula (and other environmental threats to the Sand Dunes in the Humboldt Bay region), maintenance dredging and illegal fills in the Humboldt Harbor area, and the “Exxon Project” (proposed construction of an oil jacket assembly yard on Humboldt Bay that Becking opposed). Becking was chairman of the Humboldt Bay League in the late 1960s and early 1970s, a concerned citizens group that organized around Humboldt Bay issues.

Butler Valley Dam

Scope and Contents note

News clippings, correspondence, ephemera, reports and publications relating to the Tri-Lake and Butler Valley Dam proposals (described below) and the community response to these proposals in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Also includes some content regarding the Dios Rio Dam proposal for the Eel River during the same time period (also controversial when proposed and never built), and documentation of Becking’s running for 3rd District Director of the Humboldt Bay Municipal Water District.
Background - Becking and Deane B. Mather proposed damming Maple Creek, Little River and Lindsay Creek for recreational, local economic development and municipal water use purposes in 1967. Their proposal was called the “Tri-Lake” proposal and was located in the Southern Recreational Area of the Regional Redwood Park Plan (RRPP). At the same time, the US Army Engineer District had proposed building a dam on the Mad River at Butler Valley for similar purposes. While Becking viewed the Tri-Lake plan as an independent project rather than a substitute plan to the Butler Valley Dam proposal, he criticized the Butler Valley Dam project as compromising water quality, fish and wildlife habitat and recreational potential in order to simply get more water to the communities of McKinleyville and Trinidad. He considered the Tri-Lake plan to offer more balance in relation to those issues. However, the Tri-Lake plan was treated by reviewers as an alternative or competing project to the Butler Valley Dam, and it was deemed to be economically infeasible by the State of California in 1968.
Becking did continue to promote the Tri-lakes idea, but as the Butler Valley Dam project moved forward in the process of getting approved and funded he also contributed to organized community efforts to oppose the dam construction. The dam was ultimately never built.

Redwood National Park (RNP)

Scope and Contents note

Correspondence, clippings, publications, and some scientific research efforts relating to the Redwood National Park (RNP) expansion and merger proposals in the 1970s and 1990s. Includes materials Becking kept after donating most of his Redwood National Park-related personal papers to the National Park Service at Redwood National Park.
Background - Congress established Redwood National Park (RNP) in 1968 to preserve some of the last remaining old growth redwood stands. In 1978, RNP was expanded to include roughly twice as much land as the original park. Three other redwood region parks had previously been established by the state of California: Jedidiah Smith, Del Norte Coast Redwoods, and Prairie Creek State Parks. In the 1990s, there was an effort to transfer ownership and management responsibilities of the three state parks to the National Park Service as a part of the Redwood National Park. This effort was not successful, though a Memorandum of Understanding for coordinated management was approved.
Becking was a strong and active supporter of the original establishment of the Redwood National Park and the 1978 park expansion. He was a founding member of the Emerald Creek Committee advocating proper management of the original park area and protection of the Emerald Creek Watershed (also called Harry Weir Creek) through park expansion. There was much controversy in the redwood region about the park expansion due to expected logging job losses. Becking was also active in supporting the proposal to merge the state parks into the National park system in the 1990s.
Researchers interested in this subseries may also be interested in the Becking Collection located at Redwood National Park headquarters in Orick, CA. The collection in Orick was donated by Becking to the park in 1999, and covers the original park establishment in the late 1960s with limited coverage of park expansion in the 1970s. Highlights of the Becking Collection at RNP include correspondence with policy makers relating to legislation and rationale for establishment of Redwood National Park, transcriptions of public statements, and ephemera relative to management of redwood forests produced by a range of stakeholders.
