Scope and Content Note

Broadcast live via satellite around the world on January 31 1982, this television special was in response to the declaration of martial law in Poland on December 13, 1981. Hosted by Charlton Heston, Glenda Jackson and Max Von Sydow, with appearances by world leaders (including Ronald Reagan, Margaret Thatcher, Pierre Trudeau, Francois Mitterand), Polish ambassadors (Romuald Spasowski, Zdislaw Rurarz), Polish artists (Adam Makowicz, Czeslaw Milosz), and actors and entertainers (Bob Hope, Kirk Douglas, James Michener, Frank Sinatra, Orson Welles, Henry Fonda). 3/4-inch broadcast master held at UCLA Film and Television Archive.
