Abstract: Lasar Galpern (b.1896) was a ballet master and teacher, guest artist, and director of various ballet companies in Europe (1919-32)
before relocating to the U.S. in 1932 where he was affiliated with a number of dance performances in New York. He also taught
dancing at the Washington Conservatory of Music, the New Theater School, Theater Collective and Group Theater in New York
City, was a guest lecturer at a number of U.S. educational institutions, and served as director of the San Francisco Academy
of allied Arts. The collection consists of musical scores with holograph annotations, watercolor and pencil sketches, and
ephemera related to Galpern's career in the field of dance.

Biography
Galpern was educated at the University of Moscow; served as ballet master and teacher at the Jewish Chamber Theatre, Moscow
(1919-1923); appeared as guest artist and director of various ballet companies in Germany, Italy, and Paris (1924-26); was
ballet master and musical director at the Opera House in Dusseldorf and Municipal drama School in Leipzig (1926-1932); came
to the U.S. in 1932 where he was affiliated with a number of dance performances in New York; he taught dancing at the Washington
Conservatory of Music, the New Theater School, Theater Collective and Group Theater in New York City; was guest lecturer at
a number of U.S. educational institutions; served as director of the San Francisco Academy of allied Arts.
Scope and Content
Collection consists of musical scores with holograph annotations, watercolor and pencil sketches, and ephemera related to
Galpern's career in the field of dance. Most of the scores in the collection have been enhanced with photographs and performance
programs.
