Series 1. Early academic and professional career files, 1936-1970.

Physical Description: 16 linear ft.

Scope and Content Note

This series contains materials documenting Steinhaus' education and career, beginning with his undergraduate work at North Dakota Agricultural College and continuing through his career at the University of California, Berkeley (UCB). In addition, it documents his professional activities, research, grant proposals, and correspondence from this time period. It contains student files, including his undergraduate notes; B.S. thesis from North Dakota Agricultural College; Ph.D. dissertation from Ohio State University; and postdoctoral work. Career files primarily document his work at UCB, particularly his tenure as Assistant Professor of Bacteriology and his involvement in the establishment of the Laboratory of Insect Pathology.
This series also contains files documenting Steinhaus' extensive professional involvement with scientific associations, particularly his tenure as the President of the Entomological Society of America, as well as his work as an editor and contributor to scientific journals such as the Journal of Insect Pathology. Files covering his tenure as the President of the Entomological Society of America also contain materials on the controversy over the use of chemical pesticides in the early 1960s.
Steinhaus' extensive research files, which include notes, data sheets, and photographs, document his work in entomology, particularly at the Rocky Mountain Laboratory and UCB. His work at Rocky Mountain Laboratory includes research on insect-borne diseases such as spotted fever and typhus. It also includes research on ticks and tick-borne diseases. A small topical file contains clippings and other ephemera accumulated by Steinhaus on various issues such as science, politics, and philosophy.
A personal and professional correspondence file includes letters to colleagues, students, friends, and others. Other correspondence can be found throughout this series under related topics.

Arrangement

This series is arranged topically. Files within topical groupings are arranged alphabetically by topic, organization, or form of material. Series 2. University of California, Irvine files, 1963-1970.

Physical Description: 6 linear ft.

Scope and Content Note

This series contains materials documenting Steinhaus' career at UCI as Founding Dean of the School of Biological Sciences and Professor of Biological Sciences. In addition, it documents some of his professional activities, research, grant proposals, and correspondence from this time period, and contains some memorials produced after his death in 1969.
UCI materials contain extensive documentation of the formation of the Center for Pathobiology and School of Biological Sciences, including proposed curriculum, guides to the schools, and newsletters. In addition, some files contain materials relating to the planning and opening of the UCI campus. Other UCI files contain campus-wide committee files, office ephemera, course materials from 1966 through 1969 documenting Steinhaus' biological science classes, and speech materials. Memorial materials include slides from the dedication ceremony of Steinhaus Hall in 1970, in addition to Vision, Courage, Accomplishment: the Life of Edward A. Steinhaus (Irvine: UCI Center for Pathobiology, 1970), a posthumous, memorial publication produced by UCI.
UCI materials also include numerous topical files maintained by Steinhaus during his tenure as Dean of the School of Biological Sciences. These topical files contain material on a wide range of subjects, such as his professional activities, research, grants, and writings, and associated materials may be found in other files throughout this series. Files are arranged alphabetically according to the office filing system and original folder headings are used whenever possible. Numbers are associated with the original file headings and have been included when present; a key to this numerical system is not, however, present in the collection. These numbers begin with the digits 500 through 599 and are placed within parentheses.
Professional activities and associations files document Steinhaus' extensive involvement in the scientific community while employed at UCI, particularly with the National Academy of Sciences (NAS), the National Research Council of the NAS, and the Society for Invertebrate Pathology. These materials were not interfiled with related materials found in Series 1. Early academic and professional career files during processing, and the original order of these files was maintained whenever possible.
His research materials from this period, which include data sheets, notes, and some photographs, are primarily concerned with teratology. Miscellaneous materials include numerous anecdotes, clippings, and quotes collected by Steinhaus.

Arrangement

This series is arranged topically. Files within topical groupings are arranged alphabetically by topic, organization, or form of material. For related materials documenting Steinhaus' professional activities and involvement in scientific organizations, see Series 1. Early academic and professional career files.

Series 3. Writings, 1938-1975.

Physical Description: 3 linear ft.

Scope and Content Note

This series consists of Steinhaus' published and unpublished works, and writings about Steinhaus. The bulk of this series comprises journal articles. Files also include drafts, proofs, and reviews for Steinhaus' three major publications, Insect Microbiology (New York: Comstock Pub. Co., 1946), Insect Pathology: an Advanced Treatise (New York: Academic Press, 1963), and Principles of Insect Pathology (New York: McGraw-Hill, 1949).
Most of his published articles are bound in a multi-volume collection, Publications, 1938-1971 in the form of preprints, offprints, and reprints. Published articles that appear in this collection are not listed by title in this series. Published articles that do not appear in the collection, in addition to all unpublished or apparently unpublished writings, are listed by title. These files contain preprints, offprints, and related materials. For an additional bibliography of Steinhaus' works, see Vision, Courage, Accomplishment (Irvine: Center for Pathobiology, 1970).
This series also contains a small group of correspondence with the University of California Press concerning royalty payments.

Arrangement

This series is organized first by form of material, followed by title of the book, article, or chapter. Book and journal titles are placed in italics. Published article and chapter titles are placed in quotes.
