Organizational History
In 1990, Dr. Peggy Downes Baskin, Patricia Faul, Virginia Mudd and Ilene Tuttle, formed a business association, Group Four,
for the purpose of conducting seminars on subjects of current interest to women.
Group Four sponsored two one-week conferences at Esalen Institute in 1991 and 1992 under the title
The New Older Woman. These conferences were designed to investigate commonalities facing women over fifty, produce a possible pilot framework
for participation by a broader audience of women, and to propose ways women can plan ahead for changing life patterns. The
invitees were American women of achievement from a variety of professions. They included 1991 participants: Ruth Asawa, Artist,
Mary Catherine Bateson, Anthropologist, Virginia Boyer, Gerontologist, Ruth Brinker, Community Activist & Founder of Project
Open Hand, Denise Scott Brown, Architect, Dr, Cecelia Hurwich, Psychologist, Dr. Mildred Mathias, Botanist, Bette Mullen,
Director of Women's Programs, AARP, Gail Sheehy, Author, Harriett Woods, President National Women's Political Caucus, Marilyn
Yalom, Professor French & English Literature, Stanford University. The 1992 participants were Libby Cater, White House Advisor,
Dr. Syliva Earle, Oceanographer, Claire Falkenstein, Artist, Sally Lilienthal, Director of Ploughshares Fund, Judith Paige,
Nutritionist and Fashion Model,Dr. Jane Porcino, Gerontologist, Judith Reemstma, TV Producer, Mary Louise Smith, Chair Republican
Party, Irene Tinker, Chair Women's Programs UCB, Gwen Yeo, Director Geriatric Education, Stanford University, Dr. Eleanor
Zucherman, Clinical Psychologist.
The conferences were taped, and transcribed and a book proposal was written by Group Four and shopped to publishers. After
initial hesitation by publishing community, an expanded proposal was wrtten and the format of the book was decided. The book
contract was signed with Ten Speed Press/Celestial Arts Press on October 28, 1993.
After the publication of
New Older Woman, Group Four as an association did not pursue any further conferences or activities and has been disbanded.
