organization whose mission was to utilize arts for social change. During its
first ten years, 1985-1995, SAME produced over 70 plays, original film and
video works, including
Promise of Life, a documentary on people
living with AIDS, and published
Amethyst, a semi-annual journal of creative
writing and visual arts. SAME, along with
Southern Voice newspaper, co-produced the
Southeastern Lesbian and Gay Film Festival, which screened over 50 films in
1994, a major event for the Atlanta Gay and Lesbian community. SAME also
organized numerous visual arts exhibitions and an annual arts and crafts
festival.
