Administrative records of Keith A. Brueckner, professor of physics and administrator at the University of California, San
Diego. Brueckner came to UCSD in 1959 and served as the founding chairman of the Department of Physics (1959-1961), Dean of
the School of Science and Engineering (1963), Dean of Letters and Sciences (1963-1965), first Dean of Graduate Studies (1965),
and director (1965-1970) of the Institute for Radiation Physics and Aerodynamics, later named the Institute for Pure and Applied
Physical Sciences. The collection contains minutes and agenda from numerous early UCSD committees (1963-1968); grant proposals
to furnish research and instructional facilities on Revelle and Muir College campuses; files related to the formation and
development of academic departments; budget materials (1963-1967); academic planning materials, especially for undergraduate
programs; facilities planning materials for buildings and space allocation; and, administrative subject files. The files are
arranged in nine series: 1) COMMITTEES, 2) CONTRACTS AND GRANTS, 3) CORRESPONDENCE, 4) DEPARTMENTS, 5) BUDGET MATERIALS, 6)
ACADEMIC PLANNING, 7) FACILITIES PLANNING, 8) SUBJECT FILES, and 9) ORIGINALS OF PRESERVATION PHOTOCOPIES.
Background
In 1959, Roger Revelle appointed Keith Brueckner as a professor of physics for the new campus of the University of California,
San Diego. As the founding chairman of the Physics Department, Brueckner played a key role in recruiting science faculty for
the new School of Science and Engineering, originally planned as a graduate school.
