Summary: Album contains photographs, clippings, programs, and memorabilia
pertaining to the American rugby team in the 1924 Olympics held in Paris, France. In
addition to the games, the photos document the team's voyage to France, tour through
England, and excursions in France. Many of the clippings are from French newspapers.
Other items in the collection include articles on the 1924 team, 1988-91, biographical
articles on Rogers, 1986-88, and correspondence with Norman Cleaveland regarding his
football career at Stanford and the 1924 Olympic rugby team (of which he was also a
member), 1984.

Biographical/Historical Sketch
William L. Rogers earned his A.B. (1923) and his M.D. degrees (1926) from Stanford
University. He was captain of the Stanford basketball team and a member of the American
rugby team that won the gold medal at the 1924 Olympic games in Paris. He pursued his
surgical career in San Francisco, serving as Chief of Staff at French Hospital for 36
years. During World War II, Dr. Rogers was chief of surgery in the South Pacific's first
medical surgical team. He was clinical professor of surgery at Stanford and UC
Berkeley's medical schools and also served on Stanford's Board of Trustees. He died in
1987.
