Administrative History
Health Sciences Communications, a division of University Communications, was formed in 1989 when the Public Affairs Office
of the School of Medicine and the Public Information Office of the UCSD Medical Center merged. The office of Health Sciences
Communications is responsible for disseminating newsworthy information such as achievements, programs, and projects involving
the UCSD Medical Center and the UCSD School of Medicine.
The public relations offices promoting the UCSD Medical Center and UCSD School of Medicine have experienced periodic reorganization.
Prior to being united as Health Sciences Communications, the UCSD Medical Center and UCSD School of Medicine were served by
separate public relations offices. The UCSD Medical Center's public relations office, established in 1969, functioned independently
of the Public Affairs Office on campus. In 1971, this office was designated as Public Information - University Hospital. In
1973, the public relations office for the School of Medicine separated from the Public Affairs Office on campus, forming a
new office called the UCSD School of Medicine, Public Affairs Office. These two offices merged in 1989 to become Health Sciences
Communications, a division of University Communications.
