Abstract: Records of the Vice-Chancellor, Student Affairs (1962-2004) at the University of California, San Diego contain administrative files related to student life, student committees and activities, facilities, and campus student services. The files also document early campus activities and publications, including the Trident Yearbook; the student newspapers The Indicator, Revelle Times, Sandscript, and The Triton Times; early religious activity on campus; lecture series; and public events programs. Files processed in 1987 and 2000 are arranged alphabetically. Files processed from 2001 to 2011 are arranged in alphanumeric order. The accession processed in 2000 also contains outgoing chronological correspondence files (1985-1990, 1993-1996) of the Vice-Chancellor of Student Affairs (Joseph Watson).

Administrative History

The Office of the Vice-Chancellor, Student Affairs functions to promote the enrollment, retention, academic advancement, and graduation of students, while developing leadership, communication and interpersonal skills. It fosters communities, through both college-based and campus-wide services and programs, that "promote the intellectual, social, physical, psychological, and ethical development of students. Student Affairs collaborates with students, faculty, staff, and the community in preparing students to achieve their academic and career aspirations while becoming active and constructive members of a diverse and changing society."
The office of the Dean of Student Affairs was included in the organizational structure of the first UCSD Academic Master Plan approved in principle by the University of California Regents on February 15, 1963. Theodore W. Forbes served as the first dean and reported directly to the chancellor. George S. Murphy, Jr., succeeded Forbes in 1967 and in 1969 the office changed to the Vice-Chancellor and Dean of Student Affairs and later, in 1971, became the Office of the Vice-Chancellor, Student Affairs. Subsequent vice chancellors include Howard F. Hunt (1977-1978, acting), Richard H. Armitage (1978-1981), Joseph W. Watson (1981-2007), and Penny Rue (2007-present).

The records (1962-1971) of the Dean of Student Affairs, later named the Vice-Chancellor, Student Affairs, document student life and selected activities during the first decade of UCSD's history. Topics include student services, lecture series and public events programs, the origins of the first UCSD yearbook, the Trident; and religious activities on campus. The files are arranged alphabetically by subject.
Early files from the office of the Dean of Student Affairs also include the constitution of the Associated Students of UCSD and the Associated Women Students of UCSD and files related to student newspapers The Indicator, Revelle Times, Sandscript, and The Triton Times.

The records of the Vice-Chancellor, Student Affairs contain the outgoing chronological correspondence (1985-1996) of Joseph Watson and subject files documenting the administrative functions of the office. The material spans from 1972 to 1997; however, the bulk of the material dates from 1985 to 1997. The files are arranged in two subseries: Chronological and Subject Files.
The Chronlogical Files series contains the outgoing chronological correspondence (1985-1996) of Vice-Chancellor Joseph Watson.
