Abstract: The Neighborhood Youth Association began as charitable organization under the aegis of the Episcopal Church in 1914. Using
a settlement house approach, the Association's oiginal goal was to acculturate immigrants to Los Angeles' West side neighborhoods
to American culture and values. Over the years the Association has broadened its mission to include providing social services
and counseling for poor families and teenaged children in the areas around Venice, California, and the Los Angeles port area,
particularly in the communities of Carson and San Pedro, California. These records date from 1954 to 1991, and contain information
on grants, consortia, and special progams.

Processing Note
These records include a considerable amount of material that is either redundant or is germane to other charitable groups.
The decisions about which items should be maintained in the California Social Welfare Archives was driven by the consideration
that many of the associated groups did not, themselves, have their materials stored in any local archives. Virtually all projects
undertaken by the Association were funded from a wide variety of sources. Each of these sources funded parts of several different
projects. Different record keepers within the Association organized the files by different criteria; usually either by funding
agency or by project. The division of series in this collection reflects these different record keeping approaches. As a result,
some redundancy was unavoidable.
Boxes 1-5 were processed by John Fowler in 2003. In December 2010, Sue Luftschein encoded this finding aid, and in 2012 added
two additional boxes (boxes 6 and 7) that arrived in a later accession.
