    1918: Served as volunteer ambulance driver for the Red Cross in Italy. Met Earnest Hemingway while both were recuperating in Red Cross hospital
    1921: Graduated from Harvard University
    1952: Served as Envoy to Lybia
    1958: Served as U.S. Representative to the European Office of the United Nations
    1960: Served as Ambassador to Mali, Senegal, and Mauritania
    1996: Died, Los Angeles, California
