Abstract: The digital Orange County Public Library Local History Collection contains images documenting the history and development of the Orange County communities of Silverado and Laguna Beach, and surrounding areas, from 1891 to 1989. The Silverado and Silverado Canyon area images include portraits of pioneers and pioneer families, as well as later residents, including cafe owner Tommy Beauleau. Several photographs show Black Star Canyon and grinding stones used there by early Native American inhabitants. There are photographs related to the economic activities of the Silverado area, with views of cafes, stores, farms, ranches, and mines, including images of Tommy's Cafe, Hidden Valley Ranch, and the Blue Light Mine. School activities in the area are portrayed in views of Silverado School. There are photographs related to the Silverado Volunteer Fire Dept. and to Silverado area natural disasters, including fires, landslides, and floods. The Laguna Beach area images include portraits of local artist Anna Hills and of the official Laguna Beach greeter, Eiler Larsen. Other Laguna Beach area topics include local pageants, the Laguna Beach Art Association, the Sawdust Art Festival, Pomona College Marine Laboratory, and protest demonstrations in the 1960's.

    Project Information

These photographs were selected by Orange County Public Library from two of its branches, the Silverado branch and the Laguna Beach branch. The photographs were digitized by Orange County Public Library in order to preserve images of Orange County and to share the area's cultural, social, and economic history. Through this project the images will be widely accessible to researchers, genealogists, community members, and the general public, and will be especially valuable to K-12 students and teachers, since they will be included in the California Digital Library's (CDL) Calisphere website. (see http://www.calisphere.universityofcalifornia.edu/ ).
The project was part of the California Local History Digital Resources Project (LHDRP), a multi-year program supported by the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services under the provisions of the Library Services and Technology Act, administered in California by the State Librarian. Leveraging the infrastructure of the CDL in partnership with Califa and Infopeople, the LHDRP explores a model to aggregate, preserve, and provide permanent public access to local history materials maintained by California cultural heritage institutions via a single statewide online access point. For more information about the LHDRP, see http://www.cdlib.org/inside/projects/oac/lsta/ .
Project activities spanned from August 2006 through June 2007. Activities included selection, digitization, and cataloging of a selection of photographs from the collections of the Orange County Public Library Silverado and Laguna Beach branches. Digital objects were created and cataloged using CONTENTdm, a digital asset management tool shared by LHDRP participants. The cataloging conforms to the CDL's Guidelines for Digital Objects specifications for descriptive and copyright metadata (see http://www.cdlib.org/inside/diglib/guidelines/ ).
Digitization was performed by Northern Micrographics using flatbed scanners. For each physical item, three digital image files were created: a TIFF master, a JPEG access image, and GIF thumbnail image. Digital image files conform to the CDL's Guidelines for Digital Images (see http://www.cdlib.org/inside/diglib/guidelines/bpgimages/ ).
