Background
Faxon Dean Atherton (b. 1815 -- d. 1877) was a successful business owner and landowner. He was born in Massachusetts and traveled
to California during the gold rush. Besides being the owner of a large estate in San Mateo County, he was prominent in building
railroads, banking and other various financial enterprises. He died in Fair Oaks (Atherton) in 1877, leaving a widow and seven
children.
