Biographical/Historical Note
The Italian-born painter and sculptor, Enrico Donati, became an
American citizen in 1945. During the 1930s and 1940s he was associated with
Surrealists in Paris and New York, contributing to the Surrealist retrospective
in Paris in 1947.
Scope and Content of Collection
A major focus of the letters, manuscripts and ephemera that comprise
this collection is the Surrealist retrospective "Le Surrealisme en 1947"
curated by Andrei Breton and Marcel Duchamp and held at the Galerie Maeght in
Paris, July-August 1947. The collection comprises circa 210 published and
unpublished letters, postcards, and notes received by Enrico Donati, many
relating to the organization and impact of the Surrealist exhibition. Other
letters from galleries, museums, and Donati's fellow artists reflect his
professional life and that of his friends.

his work or the 1947 surrealist exhibition, and articles about Donati's work by
American and European critics such as Dore Ashton, Hubert Crehan, Alain
Jouffroy, and Jaroslav Serpan.
