13.05 Education Programs 1980 - 1991 May

Scope and Contents note

Files concerning the involvement of CAFAM Educators in the International Festival of Masks, 1980 - 1990. Arranged chronologically by Festival year and then alphabetically by topic within each year. Many programs involving schools were conducted by CAFAM education staff in the weeks prior to the actual Festival. The Mervyn's Department Store funded this program for several years. School children and community groups were encouraged to make masks and create costumes and be in the masked parade. CAFAM Educators continued to be part of the Festival after 1990, but those files are missing. Some documentation of IFOM education programs can be found in Series 13.02 - 13.4.

Scope and Contents note

Records of the CAFAM IFOM Volunteer Coordinators. Arranged chronologically by Festival year and then alphabetically by topic within each year. Volunteers were essential to the success of the Festival, both during the Festival and in preparation for it, assisting the paid staff. They ran an information booth, sold drinks in a drink concession booth, worked in face-painting booths, assisted behind the scenes at the performance stages, worked to set up the Festival grounds, and take materials and equipment down afterward.

13.09 Slides 1976 - 1995

Scope and Contents note

35 mm. color slides of the IFOM. Although most of the slides were shot by professional photographers, they are not all identified. The slide collection is in chronological order by year and by slide number. Slides for each of the years 1976 – 1991 are organized (as they were originally) by category (parade, performers, mask-making, etc.) and then stamped with a 5- digit number running consecutively across all those years. Slides are not stamped with a number for the years 1992 - 1995. The Festival of Masks was not held during the years 1983, 1985, 1987, and 1989. There are some gaps in numerical ranges between years where slides appear to be missing. Within each year, slides are grouped by the following subjects (color-coded dots): the parade (red); demonstration, exhibit, face painting / mask-making, and vending booths (yellow or black/black); audience (tan); performers (green); food booths (blue); Maskerade Ball (red/yellow); workshops (red/red); and IFOM staff (red/black). Other less frequent subjects include parade brunch (red/tan) and Festival overview (orange). Within each category, slides that are missing or not numbered are noted. See also Series 13.08, International Festival of Masks Record Group -- Photographs Series. Each year, after the Festival, the slides were deposited in the Research Library. The organization of the slides was done cooperatively between library staff and Festival staff; however, the identification of the slides was always somewhat problematical, dependent as it was on the availability--after the Festival was over--of Festival staff that had the information needed for identification of the images. Therefore, identification was inconsistent from one Festival year to the next. Another difficulty in preserving the slides was lack of oversight of the borrowing process due to sometimes insufficient staffing of the library.

14. Audiovisual Materials

Scope and Contents note

Documentation of events at both The Egg and The Eye Gallery and at CAFAM was important to the founders and the large files of photographs and slides and collections of original audio- and videotape recordings of various events are proof of it. They are divided here into series by media: Film and Videocassettes; Audiocassettes; Slides – Exhibition-Related; Slides – Miscellaneous; and Photographs. Unfortunately, identification of these materials was inconsistent. All AV materials in this record group were produced in-house by staff or independent contractors except for some copies of radio and TV broadcasts concerning CAFAM events or interviews with CAFAM staff and a documentary film of the “Murals of Aztlan” exhibition, which will be found in Series 14.01, Box 354, folder 2. All AV documentation of the Festival of Masks will be found in the International Festival of Masks Record Group, Series 13.07 - 13.9. This includes a 16 mm. film documentary of the 1981 Festival of Masks, “Magic in the Afternoon," which will be found in Series 13.07, Box 354, folder 1.

14.01 Film and Videocassettes 1980 March - 1997 March

Scope and Contents note

This series is grouped roughly by categories in the following order: 1) exhibition-related, 2) fashion shows, 3) television productions, and 4) workshops. Within each category, videos are listed in chronological order by the year they were produced. Information for many is missing or poorly identified, and they were not reviewed in the course of being processed; consequently, the description for some is incomplete and the exact content is unknown. This series includes a VHS copy of the film, "Murals of Aztlan," a documentary of the exhibition of the same title; it is in Box 370, folder 5. A VHS copy of an interview with one of the mural artists, Wayne Healy is also in this series; it is in Box 370, folder 6. A 3/4" video copy of the Healy interview is in Box 369, folder 2. Although the term, "Films," is used to describe the format, all of the items in this series are various formats of video, either "born video" or video dubs of films (except for first item, in Box 354, folder 2).

14.03 Slides -- Exhibition-Related 1975 - 1997

Scope and Contents note

Exhibition installations, especially in the first few years, were not always photographed--and when they were, it was sometimes by an amateur photographer. Starting ca. 1980, the CAFAM librarian took on the responsibility of hiring (when funds were available) professional photographers to document exhibitions. Photographers are listed in the scope notes here where known (in some cases, the photographer's name may be found either on the slide id sheet or on the slide mount itself even if the photographer is not identified in the scope note). There are three types of 35 mm. slides in this exhibition-related collection: 1) exhibition installation slides (slides that document CAFAM exhibition designs, including some object close-ups), which are the majority of slides and sometimes also include slides that were part of slide shows or workshops in conjunction with the exhibition; 2) slides of the exhibition opening receptions; and 3) "seconds," slides left over after creating master sets of the exhibition installations. (A few of the slide sets that are included in the "seconds" group are not, in fact, seconds.) Exhibition installation slides are in chronological order by year, and within each year by exhibition opening date. Opening reception slides are in alphabetical order by exhibition title. Exhibition "seconds" are arranged alphabetically by title. A list of all CAFAM exhibitions from 1975 - 1997 is filed at the front of the collection; there are two copies of this information, one in chronological order, by exhibition date (includes only the opening date), and another in alphabetical order, by exhibition title (includes the date range of each exhibition). A slide cataloging worksheet for each sheet of (up to 20) slides indicates the following information: a slide sheet number, slide group title, type of event, location, artist, photographer, date of shoot, and a list of each slide on the sheet. Every slide is labeled in the following way: EX + two digits = exhibition year, next digit = exhibition number, letter + number = slide sheet and the slide number. The worksheets are located at the front of the folder containing the slides for that exhibition. Each exhibition slide folder's label designates the exhibition title for those slides. For more information about each exhibition, see Record Group 10, CAFAM Exhibitions, especially Series 10.2.

14.05 Photographs 1962-1995

Scope and Contents note

These photographs are from The Egg and The Eye Gallery days (1965 - 1975) and from the Craft and Folk Art Museum (1975 - 1997), as well as some images of paintings by Edith Wyle and object collections mounted at Wyle Laboratories. This collection includes many different kinds of photographic images, including photographic prints, both black and white and color (including Polaroids); amateur and professional; contact prints; negatives; 4 x 5" transparencies and 35 mm. color slides. (Slides were discovered in this group after the processing on the larger slide collections in Series 13.09, 14.03, and 14.04 was complete.) The Egg and The Eye Gallery images are primarily of exhibition openings and objects that could be purchased in the gallery; most objects exhibited were for sale, including those in scheduled exhibitions, and some objects were photographed for advertising purposes. Positive identification has been impossible in many cases. The exhibition titles on the folder headings are taken from the exhibition announcements; some titles were listed differently in exhibition signage or other sources. Exhibition dates are also taken from announcements; in some cases, only the opening date is available. If two or more exhibitions were mounted at the same time, images of more than one show may be on the same roll of film. In addition, there were undoubtedly exhibitions for which no documentation exists and they are, therefore, probably not listed anywhere in this archives. A group of unidentified images housed in this series may include images of some of these otherwise undocumented exhibitions. (See Box 489, folder 11.) For further information about The Egg and The Eye Gallery exhibitions, see Series 1.01 (Boxes 2 - 4); for further information about Craft and Folk Art Museum exhibitions, see Series 10.02 (Boxes 78 - 141). For mounted photographs that were included in the 1995 CAFAM exhibition, "Museum for a New Century" (a history of CAFAM), see Series 16.02, Memorabilia -- CAFAM. See also exhibition files within some other record groups, such as Development, Education, Design, Registrar, Public Relations, and Curatorial. For additional images, see also Series 14.03, Slides – Exhibition-Related, within the present AV Materials Record Group. Also, many other photographs will be found throughout the archives. The photographs in this series were originally filed separately, which is why they are filed separately here.
