Survey form responses, correspondence, and report drafts for the UNICEF funded Papua New Guinea Institute of Applied Social and Economic Research (IASER) project entitled "Survey of Traditional Birth Attendants in Papua New Guinea." The project was conducted by Dr. Patricia Townsend with the research assistance of Ms. Emily Dirua. Also included are prepublication articles and papers by anthropologists and researchers. The materials are arranged in three series: 1) CORRESPONDENCE, 2) RESEARCH MATERIALS and 3) WRITINGS BY OTHERS.

Scope and content:

Research materials of the Traditional Birth Attendants Project directed by Dr. Patricia Townsend. The project surveyed previous fieldworkers in Papua New Guinea on traditional childbirth practices in rural Papua New Guinea. The project was funded by UNICEF. Materials include correspondence, questionnaires, reports, and unpublished papers. The collection is arranged in three series: 1) CORRESPONDENCE, 2) RESEARCH MATERIALS and 3) WRITINGS BY OTHERS.

SERIES 1: CORRESPONDENCE

The CORRESPONDENCE series contains communications between Dr. Townsend, colleagues and anthropologists concerning research involving the observation and understanding of the Papua New Guinea traditional childbirth techniques. The bulk of the correspondence dates from 1982 to 1985.

SERIES 2: RESEARCH MATERIALS

All of the materials represented in the RESEARCH MATERIALS series pertain to the data collected for the report for the project by anthropologists during their previous field work in rural Papua New Guinea communities. The drafts of the report are included, as well as the questionnaire and responses which are organized alphabetically by informant.

SERIES 3: WRITINGS BY OTHERS

The WRITINGS BY OTHERS series, arranged alphabetically, contains reports and manuscripts by anthropologists and researchers related to childbirth, reproduction, and family practice in Papua New Guinea communities.
