Abstract: Administrative files (1960-1994) of the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs at the
University of California, San Diego. Included are administrative correspondence and subject files, bulk dates from 1972 to
1994, related to the academic functions and
responsibilities of the office. The files are arranged according to the VCAA's filing scheme in five series: 1) ADMINISTRATION,

ADMINISTRATIVE HISTORY
The Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs (VCAA) acts as the chief academic officer for
the campus with responsibility for all academic personnel matters, graduate and
undergraduate education, research activities in the departments and organized research
units, allocation of space and FTEs, academic planning, faculty recruitment and
retention, and academic affirmative action.
The academic units that report to the VCAA include Academic Affirmative Action, Academic
Computing, Academic Personnel, college provosts, the Dean of Arts and Humanities, the
Dean of Engineering, the Dean of Natural Sciences, the Dean of Social Sciences, the Dean
of International Relations and Pacific Studies, the Dean of Graduate Studies and
Research, general campus department chairs, the Media Center, University Extension,
Summer Session, and the University Library.
The position of Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs was established in 1972. Incumbents
include Paul Saltman (1972-1980), John Miles (1980-1984), Harold Ticho (1984-1990),
Marjorie Caserio (1990-1995), and Robert Dynes (1995-1996). In 1996 the position title
changed to Senior Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs.

administrative correspondence and subject files related to the functions of the office.
