    Summary: Materials pertaining to Gardner include notes for a talk "Memories of Stanford"; typescript of his address at the dedication of Memorial Church, 1903; typescript article on the Bible, n.d.; appeal letter by Gardner laying out the idea of a convalescent home for children, 1919; letter from John C. Branner regarding the evils of smoking, 1902; typescript copies of articles on Gardner's retirement, 1936; and typescript copies of remarks at Gardner's memorial service, 1949. Other materials include letters of R. Heber Newton regarding his appointment at Stanford, 1902, and draft of a long letter to Jane Stanford regarding the conflict between them, 1903; and letters of Jane L. Stanford to Rev. W. F. Nichols, 1902, asking his aid in convincing Newton to accept position at Stanford, and to Gardner, 1904, on the importance of the church to the university.

    Biographical/Historical Sketch

    Dr. David Charles Gardner was chaplain at Stanford University from 1902 until his retirement in 1936; he also taught Biblical history and literature and served on the board of the Stanford Home for Convalescent Children. When Gardner arrived in 1902, Dr. R. Heber Newton held the position of pastor; after Newton resigned in 1903, the position of pastor was dropped.
