Description
Administrative records for the Department of Physical Education from 1975-1994. The
collection includes correspondence of the department chair, departmental memoranda and
minutes of department committee meetings, departmental policy statements, reports of
accreditation reviews and of audits, and files pertaining to the department's curriculum
and staff. Also included in the records are reports and memoranda pertaining to the
reorganization of the department in 1987 and its subsequent disestablishment in 1994.
Background
The Department of Physical Education was formed in the mid-1960s with the purpose of
providing instruction to students wanting to obtain a lifetime appreciation for quality
health and fitness. The department offered programs in four general areas: conditioning,
aquatics, individual sports, and team sports. In addition, the department served the
general university community by offering fitness assessment and guidance programs to
faculty and staff. Members of the department coached intercollegiate teams or assisted in
running the recreational programs for clubs and intramural athletics.
