Campaign materials Bulk, 1968 1961-1969

Scope and Contents

Richard Nixon's 1968 presidential campaign and election campaign materials subseries contains memorandums, letters, notes, clippings, press releases, transcripts, reports, pamphlets, photographs, ephemera, realia, audiocassettes, and audiotapes, 1961-1969 (bulk 1968), created, collected, and used by Herbert G. Klein and members of his staff during Nixon's 1968 presidential campaign. Included is confidential political and voting data; memorandums from Murray Chotiner, the bulk of which are addressed to H.R. Haldeman, containing campaign information; Klein's notes regarding campaign strategizing; campaign research subject files containing information on the nomination, preparation for the convention, staff biographies, candidate itineraries, and press releases from Miami prior to and during the Convention; press conference and television appearance transcripts; speeches and reprints of articles by Nixon; information and public relations materials for Nixon's Key Issues Committee and its members, his surrogate candidates, and VIP speakers; information from and about the United Citizens for Nixon committee; miscellaneous media and campaign committee files consisting of press releases, clippings, and miscellaneous printed materials; clippings about the campaign organized by state; transcripts of speeches; press releases issued by other organizations; and information on Nelson Rockefeller. The campaign research subject files were compiled by Klein staffer Suzanne Low, who originally grouped public relations files under "Election," "Republican Party," "Nixon," and "Committees." Also included are copies of the Red Book, which contains national demographic data and election information, and was compiled by Klein staffer Margita White; daily press and post-convention schedules; focus group results; contact lists for campaign staff and press; the Nixon Sourcebook, which is a compilation of Nixon's and the Nixon family's biographical information, Nixon speeches, and remarks for use by campaign staff when creating campaign communications. The subseries also contains materials collected by Klein staffer Ginger Savelle, including committee reports, Republican party publications, and miscellaneous pamphlets. Because much of the latter material was collected by different members of Klein's staff, much of it exists in duplicate (and in some cases triplicate) form throughout this subseries (and elsewhere in the collection).

Richard Nixon's presidency working files subseries contains correspondence, reports, notes, clippings, agendas, calendars, memoranda, schedules, telegrams, ephemera, and photographs, 1963-1974 (bulk 1968-1973), created, collected, and used by Herbert G. Klein in the course of his daily activities as White House Director of Communications. The records include multiple correspondence files--Klein's staff kept multiple copies of correspondence, in "Name," "Subject," and "Chron" files, resulting in duplication of select memorandums and letters. Also included are 1968 election materials that were interfiled with post-election daily business records and correspondence. This subseries contains telephone message logs and daily schedules; memoranda to White House staff, the bulk of which were sent to H.R. Haldeman and Chuck Colson; notes taken by Klein during Cabinet meetings; notes from Congressional Leadership meetings; notes, agendas, and schedules from Rural Affairs Council meetings; notes from Council for Urban Affairs meetings; notes and agendas for the Saturday Planning Committee meetings; and notes scribbled by Klein on a wide variety of media topics. Also present are files (clippings, reports, correspondence) maintained by Klein's assistant, Jeni Brown; memoranda to the President; memoranda to William Safire, Vice President Spiro Agnew, and members of Klein's communications staff (originally labeled "People files"); information on presidential briefings; communications policy task force report with related notes, memoranums, and background information; and miscellaneous meeting notes, speech notes, briefing notes, clippings, and printed ephemera. Also included are clippings and press releases on Klein's appointment and resignation; statements and interviews by Klein; clippings about the work of the office; and articles by Klein. Many of these files were compiled and maintained by Klein staffer Suzanne Lowe. The subseries also contains schedules for Excecutive Branch speeches; information on congressional activity; news planning calendars; daily and monthly reports on the activities of the department compiled by Klein staffer Margita White; information on equal time, the Freedom of Information Act, and the Federal Communications Commission; reports on the economy created by Margita White; mailings to the press; information for the press regarding Nixon's trip to the Soviet Union; information for and about press briefings; and correspondence, memorandums, and press information for the 1970 and 1972 elections.
