    Historical Note

The San Diego County Hospital, in existence since 1869, was originally located in Old Town. By 1889, the hospital was relocated to Mission Valley, and in 1904 a new three story County Hospital building was opened in San Diego's Hillcrest neighborhood. In the early 1960s, a new facility for the hospital was built on the same site and leased in 1966 to the UCSD School of Medicine, who renamed it University Hospital. Fifteen years later, UCSD bought the facility and give it its current name: the UCSD Medical Center.

    Scope and Content

The San Diego County Hospital Records are arranged alphabetically by document type and chronologically thereafter. The Birth Register (1945-1954) lists name, mother, father, doctor, and birth date, and the Death Register (September 1941-December 1942) includes name and race. The Discharge Record and Service Analysis ledgers date from 1940 to 1951, minus the records between January 1943 to March 1951. Likewise, the Hospital Registers dated 1912-1926 are missing the years 1914 and 1915. The Summary of Patient Days (February 1941-December 1942) compiles statistics about the age, sex, and number of patients. Some summaries of patient days were originally included with the Discharge Record and Service Analysis ledgers and were left there.
