Historical Note:
Established in 1974 as the Mexican-American Women's National Association (MANA), MANA is a non-profit organization which seeks
to better Latina women, or hermanas, through educational, economic, political, health, and social advocacy programs. In 1994,
the association changed its name to the more inclusive MANA, A National Latina Organization in order to acknowledge its growing
diversity. Today, MANA consists of over 26 chapters, including MANA of San Diego County, and is the "single largest pan-Latina
organization in the United States."
In 1986, a group of Latina women dedicated to community activism founded the San Diego Chapter of MANA. The chapter offers
workshops, advocacy programs, conferences, and mentoring programs for Latinas. The organization's Hermanitas program is a
one-on-one mentorship program dedicated to supporting and encouraging pre-teen Latinas to stay in school. The Sylvia Chavez
Memorial Scholarship likewise promotes education amongst young Latinas. Every year, MANA awards this scholarship at the Brindis,
a celebratory tribute to outstanding Latina professionals. In addition, MANA's Platica lectures give local officials and
community leaders a chance to address issues relevant to the Latina community, including immigration and education. Today,
MANA of San Diego County continues to thrive as an organization dedicated to empowerment and leadership of Latinas.
Olivia Puentes-Reynolds, a local Latina activist, was active in MANA from 1993 to 2000. She served as Strategic Planning
Facilitator, Membership Chair, Program Chair and President. She chaired two Brindis, co-chaired the 1993 National MANA Leadership
Conferernce, and chaired the 1996 MANA National Leadership Conference.

Scope and Contents
The
MANA of San Diego County Records document the operation and administration of MANA during Olivia Puentes-Reynolds’ involvement in the organization. The collection
provides extensive documentation for MANA's work promoting educational achievement and increasing Latino representation at
the local, state, and national levels. Records in the collection regarding the Hermanitas program, Sylvia Chavez Memorial
Scholarship, Platica lecture series, and Political Committee highlight these endeavors. The collection dates from 1986 to
2002 with the majority of materials dating from 1994 to 1999. The collection includes correspondence, meeting minutes, brochures,
news clippings, flyers, conference materials, and committee files. The collection is divided into three series:
Administrative Files (1986-2002), the
Brindis Files (1994-2002), and
Conference Files (1993-1999).
The
Administrative Files document the basic administration of the San Diego County chapter of MANA. Arranged alphabetically, these files date from
1986 to 2002 and make up the largest of the three series. Particularly noteworthy are the files relating to MANA’s Hermanitas
Mentorship Program, which seeks to empower pre-teen girls and promote education. The series is composed of correspondence,
brochures, meeting minutes, budget information, committee files, event information, and news clippings.
The
Brindis Files document MANA’s annual Brindis celebration, which honors prominent Latina professionals and recognizes the recipients of
the Sylvia Chavez Memorial Scholarship. Highlights include drafts of speeches given by guest speakers, such as Mayor Susan
Golding. Arranged chronologically, the series dates from 1994 to 2002 and includes programs, correspondence, flyers, nominations,
speeches, and planning and budget information.
The
Conference Files date from 1993 to 1999 and document the San Diego chapter of MANA’s participation at national and international conferences
regarding women. The series is arranged alphabetically and includes notes, flyers, handouts, and schedules from national
MANA conferences, the United Nation’s Fourth World Conference on Women in Beijing, as well as training, youth, and development
conferences.
