Historical Background
The Division of Humanities at the University of California, Irvine was founded in 1965 with Departments of English, Foreign
Languages and Literatures, History, and Philosophy. The name changed to the School of Humanities in 1968. Over time new departments
were formed and new majors added.
As of 2007 the School included 12 departments and nearly 30 majors and interdisciplinary programs. The School strives to offer
a diverse curriculum to help students develop an understanding of global cultures. Students can choose majors and minors in
African American studies, art history, Asian American studies, East Asian languages and literatures, classics, comparative
literature, English, European studies, film and media studies, French, German, global cultures, history, humanities and arts,
humanities and law, Italian studies, Latin American studies, literary journalism, philosophy, Portuguese, queer studies, religious
studies, Russian studies, Spanish, visual studies (graduate only) and women's studies. Courses in 16 languages are offered.
The School of Humanities also sponsors a number of special programs. Humanities Out There (HOT) offers workshops for intermediate
and high school students. The California History-Social Science Project works with high school teachers to improve and innovate
history curricula. The Humanities Internship Program employs humanities undergraduates in businesses and nonprofit organizations
in Orange County, California.

Chronology

The Division of Humanities was founded along with the Departments of English, Foreign Languages and Literatures, History,
and Philosophy. There was also an Interdepartmental Program in Comparative Literature.

The Department of English and the Interdepartmental Program in Comparative Literature combined to become the Department of
English and Comparative Literature.

| 1968 |
The name changed from Division of Humanities to School of Humanities. The Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures
dissolved. The Department of Classics was founded.

| 1969 |
The Department of French and Italian, the Department of German and Russian, and the Department of Spanish and Portuguese were
founded.

The Program in Linguistics was founded. |
| 1972 |
The Department of German and Russian split into the Department of German and the Program in Russian. |
| 1976 |
The Program in Hebrew and Judaic Studies was founded. |
| 1987 |
The Program in Film Studies was founded. |

The Department of East Asian Languages and Literature was founded. |
| 1991 |
The Program in Linguistics moved to School of Social Sciences. |

Studies to the School of Humanities. The minor in Latin American Studies moved from Interdisciplinary Studies to the School
of Humanities to become the Interdisciplinary Minor in Latin American Studies.

The collection documents the activities, events, academic requirements, and course offerings of the University of California,
Irvine, School of Humanities and its departments and programs. It contains publications from all programs and divisions of
the School of Humanities except for the Department of English and Comparative Literature. Included are promotional brochures,
event fliers, manuals, newsletters, course descriptions, and student literary journals.
