Collection also includes a certificate of charter membership of Stanford Futures signed by Herbert Hoover and a note regarding
the rent on her Stanford residence.

Biographical/Historical Sketch
Alice Newman Hays earned her AB in English at Stanford University in 1896 and her librarian's degree at the New York State
Library School. She returned to Stanford in 1901 to begin her long career in the University Library, retiring in 1940 when
she was chief of the Reference Division.
Notebook contains entries regarding her visits to libraries in England (Bodleian Library, Radcliffe Library of Science, Oxford
Public Library, British Museum Library, and others) and France (Bibliotheque National and public libraries in Paris) during
August and September 1909 (studying library methods), along with letters of introduction by Ewald Flugel and David Starr Jordan.
