Scope and Content of Collection
"The Dean of Students meets and corresponds with students and parents, monitors student political issues and crises, student
demonstrations and rallies, student conduct cases, and student problems such as alcohol and drug abuse and student deaths.
The staff of the Office of Student Life help students with a variety of issues and concerns that affect the quality of student
life. We provide general assistance to students in problem solving and emergencies, addressing grievance issues, and offer
referrals when necessary. When a personal or family crisis calls students away from campus, we process administrative withdrawals
and petitions for incomplete grades. We provide educational programs on hate incidents and crimes, academic conduct, and the
first-year experience. We are responsive to the needs and issues of students on campus and out in the Isla Vista community,
and actively work with students and other departments to provide solutions to these problems. Through the Isla Vista Community
Development Peer program, students represent the University in the community and through various projects and programs help
develop a sense of community and work towards creating a safer environment in Isla Vista. We actively promote a set of community
standards that affirms the right of freedom of expression within our community and also affirms the campus commitment to the
highest standards of civility. We provide enforcement of general campus regulations through both formal and informal disciplinary
processes.
"The Office of Student Life also provides services for campus organizations' members and leaders including: facilities room
scheduling, organization advising and consultation, leadership training and development, program planning and limited funding
sources, fund raising, trustee accounts, publicity and promotion, fraternities and sororities, special projects and events,
Nexus on Campus This Week Monday calendar, organizational development resource library, UCSB Campus Regulations Applying to
Campus Activities, Organizations, and Students, and an on-line campus organization directory. During the academic year, Student
Life co-coordinates (with the College of Letters & Science) Interdisciplinary Studies 20: 'Introduction to the University,'
a 3.0-unit academic course in which students examine the nature and purpose of higher education and their own relationship
to the intellectual, social and cultural climate of the University."
The collection contains mainly materials on the Dean of Students, who later became part of the Office of Student Life. The
Office of Student Life is a department of the Division of Student Affairs.
