The collection contains correspondence, scrapbooks of her article on "On Ageing", photographs, subject files, letters and newspaper clippings.

Biographical / historical:

Josephine Smith, an author, who wrote about the elderly, married to Dwight Smith, and wrote a column, "On Aging", for the Claremont Courier while she lived in the area. After the couple retired they lived in Pilgrim Place, a retirement community in Claremont, California. She taught classes at Mt. San Antonio College. With her husband she produced a weekly radio program, served on the Claremont Human Services Commission and was involved in several programs for the elderly. Her previous professions include being a nurse, a college teacher, a social worker, a mother, a wife, a Sunday school teacher, and an activist for the elderly. Mrs. Smith graduated from Mt. Holyoke College in Massachusetts, and then entered St. Luke's Hospital in New York City to train as a nurse. Mrs. Smith started her radio career during World War II while her husband was a Methodist minister in Olympia, Washington. During the 1950s she and her husband moved back to East Coast. Mrs. Smith enrolled at Boston University School of Social Work. The Smiths retired an moved to Pilgrim Place in 1970. She then enrolled at LaVerne University so she could teach in California. She was born in 1898 and died in 1996 in Claremont, California. "Busy Teacher hasn't time to practice at 82". Progress Bulletin, August 27, 1980.
