Series 1 Presidents' Records

Scope and Content Note

The President's records consist largely of correspondence but also include some reports, memoranda, agenda, minutes, and other materials. Typical subjects include athletics, social events (concerts, dances, etc.), the Honor Code and Fundamental Standard, ASSU elections and committee meetings, public service and philanthropy efforts (often filed under "Drives"), the student union, and relations with student governments at other universities. Stanford agencies often represented in the records include Stanford Alumni Association, Stanford Fund (and other fundraising groups), Dean of Men, Dean of Women, Dean of Students, President's Office, other student associations (such as the Interfraternity Council, Institute for International Relations, KZSU, and Ram's Head), and the Stanford Bookstore. There is also frequently correspondence with the National Student Federation of America (1930s-1940s), the National Students Association (1950s-1960s), the Pacific Student Presidents Association, and the World Student Service Fund (1940s). Finally, there are unique subjects relevant to the historic era: Civil Defense during World War II and the political unrest of the 1960s-1970s.

Series 3 Student Manager

Scope and Content Note

The Student Manager records consist largely of bound volumes of reports from or about various clubs, committees, or events in an academic year. Detailed lists of contents for each volume are included in the listing that follows. Bound student police reports for 1939-1963 are also in this series. The responsibilities of the student police were largely crowd control at campus events; their duties included monitoring behavior, handling tickets, controlling parking and traffic, and keeping out gate crashers. The reports list the student police on duty, sometimes the various tasks, and usually include a paragraph or two on the event itself. Many of the entries are from The Sunday Flicks.

Series 6 Organizations

Scope and Content Note

This series largely consists of bound reports from the Dramatic Council and the Publications Council. The Dramatic Council reports, 1925-1941, include expenses, budgets, contracts, some correspondence, minutes, and narrative reports. The Publications Council reports, 1931-1932 and 1938-1967, include financial information on the Chaparral, Quad, and Daily, and Publications Council minutes. Records for the 1932/33 through 1938/39 academic years are included in Student Manager's reports in Series 3. Other records in this series include bound volumes containing constitutions and by-laws of student organizations, 1920-1963, and miscellaneous files from the Publications Council.
