Biographical/Historical Note
John Arthur Giles Gere (1921-1995) was a British art historian and
connoisseur of Italian sixteenth-century drawings. Educated at Winchester and
Balliol, he became Assistant Keeper in the Department of Prints and Drawings at
the British Museum in 1946, and served as Keeper from 1973 to 1981.
He complied, with Philip Pouncey, two important catalogs of drawings:

, published in 1962, and

.
Gere wrote a series of articles on Taddeo Zuccaro in the
Burlington
Magazine
, leading to catalogs, exhibitions, and his monograph,
Taddeo Zuccaro:

Scope and Content of Collection
Papers and photographs document Gere's research on Italian
drawings, especially those of Raphael and his circle, and Taddeo Zuccaro.
Files contain published and unpublished lectures, including a series
on Raphael and his circle given at Cambridge; notes and drafts for articles; 33
notebooks detailing research on Italian drawings in various print rooms; 4
folders of correspondence, especially concerning Gere's monograph on the
drawings of Taddeo Zuccaro and related letters from Walter Vitzthum; and ca.
3,100 annotated photographs of Italian old master drawings, one-half of which
are of drawings and paintings by Taddeo and Federico Zuccaro.
