Historical Background
University Hills is a 200-acre residential community for University of California, Irvine faculty and staff. It is located
on the UCI campus and includes houses, condominiums, and apartments. Houses and condominiums are individually owned, but
the land on which they stand is owned by the University of California Board of Regents and leased to Irvine Campus Housing
Authority (ICHA). Individual lots are subleased to home buyers. Because only the structures are bought and sold, the University
is able to keep housing prices below average costs in the Irvine area.
The Irvine Campus Housing Authority is a not-for-profit, public benefit corporation created by the regents to develop affordable
faculty and staff housing at UCI. The corporation is governed by a board of directors appointed by the UCI chancellor with
the consent of the President of the University of California.
Eligibility for University Hills residence is based on a priority system, in the following order: newly recruited members
of the Academic Senate and the Senior Management group; current members of the Academic Senate and the Senior Management group;
newly recruited members of the non-Senate academic staff and Management and Senior Professional group; current academic staff
and Management and Senior Professional group members; and other staff members.
