Biography
The Battledore Press was the personal press of Mary and Andrew (Andy)
Horn. Mary and Andrew printed their first piece on September 8, 1961
(see box 6, folder 3 for the handwritten note about this item). Andrew
oversaw the creation of the library school at UCLA in 1959/1960 in
addition to being a professor and dean of the school; he also supervised
the Horn Press to allow library students the opportunity to print. He
was a friend and colleague of Lawrence Clark Powell, the well known
University Librarian of UCLA. Further biographical information may be

Scope and Content
This collection contains material created by and for the Battledore
Press which was run by Mary and Andrew (Andy) Horn. Items are mostly
printed ephemera including invitations, announcements, cards,
bookplates, and certificates for various events. They include UCLA
library-related gatherings, advertisements for businesses, Christmas and
other holiday cards, prints of quotations and other short pieces of
literature.
Arrangement
The boxes of material are divided by general subject area
as follows:
- Box 1 -- General Ephemera printed by the Horn Press
- Box 2 -- Items printed for individuals and non-UCLA institutions
- Box 3 -- Items printed for the UCLA School of Library Service (after
1974 the Graduate School of Library and Information Science, and later
the Department of Information Studies in the Graduate School of
Education and Information Studies)
- Box 4 -- UCLA related material, other than the library school, including
Friends of UCLA Libraries, Clark Library, Campbell Book Collection
Competition, etc.
- Box 5 -- Miscellaneous and Oversized (type specimens)
- Box 6 -- Items printed for printing and bibliophilic associations
(including the Benign Order of Adana Pressmen, Companions of the Moxon
Chappell, the Rounce and Coffin Club, and the M-W-F Society)
- Box 7 -- Greeting cards and ephemera printed for Andrew Horn and his
family's use
A portion of the collection was originally arranged in folders and
inventoried by Richard Buchen from the "original 29 folders" on June 1,
1984. The order from this period was maintained by leaving the materials
divided into the seven categories (one for each box). Various acronyms
are used for the library school at UCLA depending on the time period:
SLS (School of Library Service) or GSLIS (Graduate School of Library and
Information Science). However, the name of the school is currently the
Department of Information Studies in the Graduate School of Education
and Information Studies. Some folders have suggested dates written on
them, but it is unclear how the processor decided on the dates for any
given undated piece of ephemera.
