Biography

Anna Emily Sumner was born in 1904; AB, History, UCLA, 1926; charter member, Delta Gamma sorority; woman's page editor, Los Angeles Evening Express; wrote eight romance novels under pseudonym Marya Moore in the 1930s; director of public information for University Extension, 1932-66; founding member, Gold Shield; vice president, UCLA Alumni Association, 1938-39; founding member of the UCLA Affiliates, the Friends of the UCLA Library, and the UCLA Art Council; first woman to receive Alumni Distinguished Service Award, 1962.

Scope and Content

Collection consists of correspondence, memoranda, clippings, photographs, and ephemera related to Sumner's association with various UCLA organizations. Organizations include: UCLA Art Council, University Affiliates, University Extension, Gold Shield, and the UCLA Alumni Association. Also includes a scrapbook of Los Angeles Express articles.

Expanded Scope and Content

Collection contains Miss Sumner's files on her UCLA related activities from 1932 to about 1967. During that period she was in charge of Public Information-Press for University Extension at UCLA. She was also a charter member of the UCLA chapter of Delta Gamma; a founding member of Gold Shield (a UCLA Service group) and served as its president, 1938-1940. She has been vice-president of the UCLA Alumni Association, president of the Los Angeles city Panhellenic Council, president of UCLA Affiliates, a board member of the Friends of the UCLA Library, a founding board member of the UCLA Art council, and a founding member of the Board of directors of the UCLA Faculty Center.
Prior to working at UCLA, Miss Sumner worked for the Los Angeles Express as a page editor. This period of her life is reflected in the scrapbook of Express clippings which contains the articles she wrote for the newspaper.
The files are arranged alphabetically under the same headings Miss Sumner used. There is, thus, some duplication of materials and some scattering of closely related materials.
Several photographs have been removed from the collection, if they were of general interest rather than specific to Miss Sumner's career. These have been filed in the Department's Picture Collection (Collection 99) under their subjects.

Organization and Arrangement

Arranged in the following series:
