    Biography / Administrative History

    John Henry Lick was born June 30, 1818 in Fredricksburg, Pennsylvania. The son of Pioneer James Lick, he arrived in California, June 16, 1855 aboard the vessel "John L. Steaphen". He spent many years as a Notary Public in San Francisco and the Nevada territory. He died October 2, 1891 in Lickdale, Pennsylvania.

    Scope and Content of Collection

    This collection consists of the handwritten personal daily diary of John H. Lick kept during the period January 22, 1856 - September 12, 1856. Of note is the entry for February 15, 1856, which describes an earthquake of some magnitude that took place in San Francisco on that day. Many of the other entries give a general description of the type and quality of weather on a particular day, whether it was sunny and warm, foggy, cloudy or raining. Some of the entries mention day trips that the author made to Santa Clara or San Jose and on certain of these days he notes that he went fishing and what he caught. Many pages of the diary contain no entries.
