Abstract: This collection of over 100 maps documents the State of California, but especially its southern counties. Although the maps
are predominantly reproductions they also include a number of originals, with some dating back to the 1820s. Early plats and
diseños document the settlement of Southern California, with an emphasis on Orange County, and provide information on land
ownership, land divisions, and geographical features. Other more recent thematic maps illustrate the state's geology, show
transportation grids, and document the California coast and islands. The collection also includes a large number of contemporary
city and county maps and large-scale USGS (United States Geological Survey) maps. The maps occasionally include neighboring
states.

Scope and Content of Collection
This collection of over 100 maps documents the State of California, but especially its southern counties. Although the maps
are predominantly reproductions they also include a number of originals, with some dating back to the 1820s. Early plats and
diseños document the settlement of Southern California, with an emphasis on Orange County, and provide information on land
ownership, land divisions, and geographical features. Other more recent thematic maps illustrate the state's geology, show
transportation grids, and document the California coast and islands. The collection also includes a large number of contemporary
city and county maps and large-scale USGS (United States Geological Survey) maps. The maps occasionally include neighboring
states.
Diseños are maps or plats of Spanish and Mexican land grants, which usually accompanied petitions for such grants.
Plats are maps, charts or plans that show the location, boundaries, and ownership of individual properties.
