Biographical / historical:

The Veterans of the Abraham Lincoln Brigade (VALB) is the collective organization that represents men and women from the United States who volunteered to fight in the Spanish Civil War from 1936-1938. Made up of individuals from a number of battalions (including the Abraham Lincoln, George Washington and the MacKenzie-Papineau), the organization also has members that served in the medical corps (American Medical Bureau to Save Spanish Democracy), transport group (Regiment de Tren) and artillery units such as the John Brown Artillery Corps.

The VALB was formally founded in 1939 and acts as a forum for the remembrance of and dissemination of information on the Spanish Civil War, as a mechanism for networking among veterans, their families and their supporters, and as a tool for political advocacy. In recent decades, it has taken up the task of documenting its own history and collected papers, oral histories and other records under the auspices of the Archives of the Abraham Lincoln Brigade. The bulk of these materials are found at the Tamiment Library and Robert F. Wagner Labor Archives at New York University.
