    System of Arrangement

Items in the Cuban Poster collection have been assigned numbers as they are received and inventoried by the library. These are simply sequential numbers appended to the collection number (BANC PIC 2001.061.) They reflect no intellectual arrangement, no evidence as to provenance, and they are not related to the creation of the items in any way. The numbers are required for item identification and retrieval from storage.
For ease of use, this finding aid has been arranged alphabetically by publisher's name, then sub-ordered chronologically. Materials by unknown publishers or artists are arranged alphabetically by title following the listing of known publishers. No cross-referencing is available at this time.

    Acquisition Information

The Cuban Poster collection was part of a bibliographic exchange between the Doe Library of the University of California at Berkeley and the Biblioteca Nacional José Martí of Cuba. The Bancroft Library became custodians of the initial 346 items of the collection in 2001.
136 items (plus three duplicates) were added between approximately 2010 and 2016, via the ongoing exchange.

    Processing Information

Processed by Lincoln Cushing in 2005, with prior preparation by Carlos Delgado and LuAnn Sleeper in 2002. Additions processed by LuAnn Sleeper in 2017.

    Scope and Content of Collection

The Cuban poster collection consists of posters given to the library of the University of California at Berkeley as part of a cooperative agreement with the José Martí National Library of Cuba. It consists chiefly of posters related to cultural events, social topics, or international solidarity.
The posters were produced by official government agencies, including Consejo Nacional de Cultura, Editorial Letras Cubanas, Instituto Cubano de Amistad con los Pueblos (ICAP), Organización de Solidaridad de los Pueblos de Africa, Asia y América Latina (OSPAAAL), and the Ministerio de Cultura. The great majority of dated posters were produced between 1961 and 1989, with several items from the 1990s and later. Over 100 items are undated.
The José Martí National Library of Cuba, in its national repository function, is statutorily designated to receive five copies of all posters published within Cuba. The basis of the Cuban Poster collection at the University of California, Berkeley was an initial gift of 344 of their duplicate posters, received in the year 2000. Future additions are expected as the cooperative arrangement between the libraries continues.
