Background
- Scope and content:
-
The Cuban poster collection consists of posters given to the library of the University of California at Berkeley as part of a cooperative agreement with the José Martà National Library of Cuba. It consists chiefly of posters related to cultural events, social topics, or international solidarity.
The posters were produced by official government agencies, including Consejo Nacional de Cultura, Editorial Letras Cubanas, Instituto Cubano de Amistad con los Pueblos (ICAP), Organización de Solidaridad de los Pueblos de Africa, Asia y América Latina (OSPAAAL), and the Ministerio de Cultura. The great majority of dated posters were produced between 1961 and 1989, with several items from the 1990s and later. Over 100 items are undated.
The José Martà National Library of Cuba, in its national repository function, is statutorily designated to receive five copies of all posters published within Cuba. The basis of the Cuban Poster collection at the University of California, Berkeley was an initial gift of 344 of their duplicate posters, received in the year 2000. Future additions are expected as the cooperative arrangement between the libraries continues.

These are simply sequential numbers appended to the collection number (BANC PIC 2001.061.) They reflect no intellectual arrangement, no evidence as to provenance, and they are not related to the creation of the items in any way. The numbers are required for item identification and retrieval from storage.
