The Edgar Wayburn Papers (1923-2010, bulk 1951-2007) focus on Wayburn's conservation work both in the United States and internationally. The papers consist primarily of subject files covering Wayburn's work with the Sierra Club and international conservation organizations, as well as his efforts concerning national parks, Alaska, and the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. Also includes correspondence, writings, and audiovisual materials.

Biographical / historical:

Edgar Wayburn was born on September 17, 1906 in Macon, Georgia. A medical doctor, he is best known as a national leader in the Sierra Club, beginning in the 1940s. With his wife, Peggy, he was a key player in the creation of Redwood National Park, Point Reyes National Seashore, and the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, all in Northern California.The Wayburns also worked tirelessly for the preservation of over 100 million acres of public lands in Alaska. Wayburn received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1999.

Acquisition information:
The Edgar Wayburn Papers were given to The Bancroft Library by Edgar Wayburn in February 1996. Additions were made on June 27, 2001. Further additions were made by the Sierra Club in 2010 and 2011.

Collection includes 1996 and 2001 gifts from Edgar Wayburn, cartons 283-293 transferred from Sierra Club Members Papers (BANC MSS 71/295 c), and gifts from the Sierra Club in 2010 and 2011.
