Biography/History
Walter M. Mirisch was born on November 8, 1921 in New York City; attended City College of New York; BA, University of Wisconsin,
1942; graduated, Harvard Graduate School of Business Administration, 1943, following his World War II service, Mirisch began
producing films for Monogram Pictures; became executive producer at Allied Artists in 1951; formed an independent production
company, Mirisch Company, in 1957 with his brother Marvin and half brother Harold; Mirisch Corporation's list of films includes
3 Best Picture Academy Award winners:
The Apartment (1960),
West Side Story (1961), and
In the Heat of the Night (1967); Mirisch was president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) from 1973-77 and was presented with
the Thalberg Memorial Award (1978) and the Hersholt Humanitarian Award (1983) by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences
(AMPAS); received the UCLA medal in 1989.
