Biography

Earl H. Lowry was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to Enoch and Anetta (Anna) Lowry on February 26, 1899. While performing in Pittsburgh orchestras, he met and married Jessie Richardson, and the couple moved to Denver, Colorado sometime around 1920-1921. Census and city directory records from the time list Lowry's occupation as musician in the theater industry. Earl and Jessie had two children while in Denver: John Rowland (Jack), born in 1921, and Norma, born in 1929. Eventually the family moved to Los Angeles, California, where Earl continued to find work as a pianist, accompanying British entertainer Gracie Fields, and joining the Theatre Mart as Music Director toward the end of its long-running production "The Drunkard." He corresponded avidly with composers and music publishers throughout the 1940s-1960s, amassing a large collection of music scores. Jessie Lowry held a variety of secretarial jobs throughout her life before retiring in 1965. After Jessie's death in 1970, Earl spent most of his time in Los Angeles libraries compiling exhaustive lists of composers and authors, reflecting his strong interests in music and literature. Earl Lowry died in Los Angeles in 1976.

Scope and Content

Musical scores, primarily modern piano compositions, collected by Earl Lowry. Most are printed reproductions but there are some copied by Lowry, as well as three of Lowry's own compositions. The collection also includes correspondence from music publishers, and composers who Lowry contacted with questions and requests for music, including Charles Mills, Robert Palmer, Kaikhosru Shapurji Sorabji, Josef Alexander, Lockrem Johnson, Robert Kurka, Vincent Persichetti, Karol Rathaus, and Geirr Tveitt. Charles Mills wrote to Lowry for nearly five years, and his letters detail life as a struggling musician/composer trying to make a living in New York City.
The collection also includes some family correspondence, primarily to Earl from his son Jack; Lowry's personal notes and notebooks, and a few programs with him listed as a performer. There is a small amount of correspondence and personal material related to Earl Lowry's wife Jessie.
Research materials consist of notes and notebooks Lowry kept, reflecting his interests in music and literature, and include lists of composers and authors and their works. Also included are music catalogs spanning 50 years, and programs from events Lowry attended, primarily in the Los Angeles area.

Series 2: Correspondence and personal materials. 1913-1975.

Scope and Content

Correspondence includes letters from music publishing companies, and composers Earl Lowry contacted with questions about their creative process and requests for works. He received personalized responses from many composers, Robert Palmer and Kaikhosru Shapurji Sorabji among them, and also Josef Alexander, Lockrem Johnson, Robert Kurka, Vincent Persichetti, Karol Rathaus, and Geirr Tveitt. Lowry also wrote to pianist and composer Charles Mills, who was living in New York City at the time. After Lowry's initial request for copies of Mills' piano compositions, the two corresponded for almost 5 years. Letters detail Mills' struggles to make a living as a musician/composer in New York, with mentions of some high profile commissions as well as requests for money. There are also letters from Ray Hastings, an organist with the Los Angeles Philharmonic and Temple Baptist Church who evidently taught or mentored Lowry a bit and found some work for him in area churches.
Family correspondence includes a few letters from Lowry's father, his brother Tom, and his daughter Norma, as well as notes and drawings from a few of his grandchildren. Correspondence from Lowry's son John Rowland Lowry (Jack), includes a few letters and telegrams sent while he was a lieutenant in the US Army during World War II, describing his daily life during that time. There are also a few recital programs featuring Lowry, personal notebooks he used to keep track of expenses, groceries, and medication, and some correspondence and personal materials related to Lowry's wife Jessie.
Photographs include one photo of Earl Lowry as a young man, a few of him at the piano, and various unidentified family photos. There is also a folder of portraits of early 19th century singers and entertainers inscribed to the conductor and Los Angeles Philharmonic music director Walter Henry Rothwell, which was found among Lowry's collected scores.

Series 3: Research materials. 1920s-1970s.

Scope and Content

Notes and notebooks Lowry kept, reflecting his interest in modern classical composers, primarily for piano, and literature. Music notes include extensive lists of composers and their works, sometimes annotated with facts and details about the composer's life. Some lists are compiled by categories, such as country of origin or appearance in music reference books.
Literature notes include lists of authors and their works, often with publisher and price information, books Lowry hoped to seek out at various Los Angeles area libraries, and occasionally copies of reviews or criticism. Some notebooks are dedicated to a single author, such as Aldous Huxley or Thomas Wolfe.
Series also includes music catalogs, collected over a period of fifty years, newsletters, and programs from concerts and events Lowry attended over the years, mainly in and around the Los Angeles area.
