Post-War Years (1945-1954)

Biography

The end of the war in 1945 marked a turning point for the United States as it embarked on an era of post-war growth and prosperity. It was a turning point for Dorothea Lange, as well. Health problems, traced to an ulcer, increasingly began to plague her, forcing her to cease actively photographing until approximately 1951. Among one of her last projects before she became seriously ill was a series of photographs taken for the State Department in the spring of 1945 to document the United Nations Conference in San Francisco.
Lange later occasionally picked up her camera to take a few photographs, for example, during James Roosevelt.s campaign for the California governorship in 1950, but spent most of the six years following the war resting and recuperating.
When Lange resumed actively photographing around 1951, the direction of her work changed. In contrast to her previous documentary photography that focused on the way social, political, and economic turmoil affected society at large, she shifted her attention to a more intimate view of people and their lives, often focusing on her growing family.
In addition to the numerous family photographs taken during these years--on view in the Early Years (1918-1935), Portraits, & Family Photos section)--other thematic clusters of prints appear in Lange.s files variously identified as Consumers, Relationships, Diplomats, and San Francisco.

United Nations Conference in San Francisco

Biography

Among one of her last projects before she became seriously ill with an ulcer was a series of photographs taken for the State Department in the spring of 1945 to document the United Nations Conference in San Francisco. Working again under the direction of Jess Gorkin, Dorothea Lange was assigned to complete a picture story on the women representatives attending the conference as well as to cover specific international delegations. But it was a frustrating assignment for Lange: she was mostly confined to working from the gallery because of government restrictions and was never allowed to be close enough to her subjects to do the job she wanted. Impatient with the imposed limitations, she went outdoors looking for delegates and photographed them when she could.

Post-War Themes (1945-1954)

Scope and Content

In addition to the numerous family photographs taken during these years, other thematic clusters of prints appear in Dorothea Lange.s files variously identified as Consumers, Relationships, Diplomats, and San Francisco. Most were taken not far from home, in Oakland, San Francisco, and valley towns such as Stockton and Tracy.
Lange was intrigued by the growing affluence of American society in the post-war years, and the museum.s archive is filled with numerous images documenting this phenomenon. In photographs such as Love and Marriage--they go together like a horse and carriage. New York City--1954, Lange sought to visually symbolize a relationship through the details of a couple.s stance. A contrasting theme that also absorbed Lange.s attention focused on what she termed the walking wounded, those people in society who are rootless and dislocated from the norms of society. Lange related such images to her earlier photographs such as White Angel Breadline, 1933, and continued with this motif throughout her life.
