The collection contains records of the activities of the First Century Families, especially centered on the planning and implementation
of the group's annual luncheon. Much of the material was preserved and collected by Christine Shirley, the organization's
historian; there is also correspondence between Shirley and members of the organization. The collection contains general administrative
files, including correspondence with members; programs, photographs, audio and videotapes, slides, and typescripts of presentations
of, and planning documents for, many of the organization's annual luncheons; books, clippings, typescripts and other materials
on the history of early Los Angeles families and aspects of Los Angeles history; and clippings documenting the organization's
annual luncheons.

Processing note
The collection was rehoused and a preliminary inventory created by John Fowler in 2006. In 2012, Sue Luftschein organized
the collection, rehoused and described the remainder of the collection, and produced this finding aid.
Historical note
The First Century Families is an organization with membership made up of descendants of Los Angelenos who arrived in the city
during its first one hundred years (1781-1881). It holds annual luncheons for the purpose of recounting and recording the
city's early days.
