Southern California Rapid Transit District collection of Metro Rail artist's renderings, 20-DGPTL. Los Angeles County Metropolitan
Transportation Authority Library and Archive.
Southern California Rapid Transit District material was passed on to the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority
(LACMTA) after LACMTA was created by the California State Legislature through a merger of the Los Angeles County Transportation
Commission and the Southern California Rapid Transit District.
Biography / Administrative History
The Southern California Rapid Transit District (SCRTD) was created through the California state legislature on August 22,
1964 in order to improve public transportation in Southern California and to create rapid transit for Los Angeles. In 1976,
the Los Angeles County Transportation Commission (LACTC) was created and shared responsibilities with SCRTD in policy development
and allocation of funds. SCRTD and LACTC were merged in 1993 by the state legislature, resulting in the Los Angeles County
Metropolitan Transportation Authority.
Scope and Content of Collection
The Southern California Rapid Transit District began planning for the Los Angeles subway, the Red Line, after obtaining federal
funding for the project. Part of this planning included design of the subway route and stations.
Originally planned for a route that proceeded west from Downtown Los Angeles underneath Wilshire Boulevard, then following
Fairfax Avenue north to Sunset Boulevard, backtracking east to Cahuenga Boulevard, and then traveling northwest to the terminus
at North Hollywood station, this collection includes renderings depicting stations that were never constructed.
The subway plans eventually changed, following Wilshire, but turning north at Vermont Avenue, continuing West along Hollywood
Boulevard, and then northwest to the terminus at North Hollywood. An additional corridor, the Purple Line follows the same
route as the Red Line except that it continues west after Wilshire/Vermont Station and has a terminus at the intersection
of Wilshire Boulevard and Western Avenue. Artist's renderings depicting stations along the now existing route are also included
in this collection.
Series arranged alphabetically by station name. Arrangement within each series is chronological.
