Administrative History:

Missionary of the Southern Baptist Convention, Miss Bertha, served as missionary to China from 1917-1948 and as the SBC's first missionary to Taiwan from 1948-1958. She traveled extensively around the world after her retirement from missions spreading the gospel of Jesus Christ. In 1973, she founded the Peniel Prayer Center in Cowpens, South Carolina, a prayer retreat for Christians across the nation.

Scope and Contents

The Olive Bertha Smith Collection consists of 433 folders documenting Smith's career as a Southern Baptist foreign missionary to China and Taiwan and later as the founder and director of the Peniel Prayer Center near her home of Cowpens, South Carolina. The collection includes notes from Smith's experience as a missionary to China and Taiwan and also Bible lessons, Bible notes, journal entries, manuscript publication notes, teaching materials, 78 Chinese Bible lesson posters, and an assortment of materials detailing the administrative history of the Peniel Prayer Center. The correspondence section contains letters from 1917-1988. Correspondents include Jimmy Carter, Baker James Cauthen, Gerald Melton, Milledge Theron Rankin, and Adrian Rogers.
