Boxes 1-3

Series 1.  Grunwald boat photograph albums and corresponding loose photographs, circa 1960-1987

Extent: 40 items (3 photograph albums and 37 loose photographic prints)

Scope and Content Note

Photographs of boats under construction at the boat shop Aeolus Boats, and boats in use, either at dock or on the water. Includes some photographs of Bill Grunwald and other men working on boats inside Aeolus Boats. Some of the photographs were taken by the professional photographer Reg McGovern for use in a Redwood City Tribune newspaper article written about Bill and the shop in 1974. Photograph album #2 contains several photos of an Asa Thompson skiff at the foot of Hyde Street Pier in June 1987, one of which shows the bow of C.A. THAYER in the background. It is likely that Grunwald built the skiff, because there is correspondence in HDC 1347 that indicates that Grunwald was commissioned to build 3 flat bottomed skiffs by the Golden Gate National Recreation Area National Maritime Museum. Two were delivered to Hyde Street Pier on October 5, 1983 and one was delivered on September 7, 1984.
