TROOP and subsequently as ANNIE M. REID. The vessel was bought by San Francisco Mayor James Rolph in 1912 when she was renamed. Under the command of Captain J.A. Durkee, the bark carried coal and nitrate. There are many interesting entries related to World War I and to difficulties with the crew. Howard D. Troop (built 1892; bark, 4m) and Annie M. Reid (built 1892; bark, 4m) logbooks (SAFR 16441, HDC 156) contains fifteen logbooks for the four-masted bark known first as HOWARD D. TROOP and subsequently as ANNIE M. REID. The vessel was bought by San Francisco Mayor James Rolph in 1912 when she was renamed. Under the command of Captain J.A. Durkee, the bark carried coal and nitrate. There are many interesting entries related to World War I and to difficulties with the crew. The collection is available for research use without restriction.

In volume 1, from 1901 to 1902, the HOWARD D. TROOP voyaged from New York to China, Washington and Amsterdam under Captain Corning carrying wheat, oil and lumber for the Troop family of New Brunswick, Canada.

In volume 2, from 1904 to 1905, the HOWARD D. TROOP voyaged from New York to China, Japan and New York.

In volume 3, from 1909 to 1910, the HOWARD D. TROOP voyaged between Yokohama, Portland Oregon and Queenstown with a cargo of wheat under Captain J.A. Durkee. This log was kep by Chief Officer I. Scott.

In volume 4, in 1911, the HOWARD D. TROOP voyaged between Havre, Montevideo Sydney and the English Channel carrying coal and returning with wheat. The log was kept by A.C. Thompson. Entries recorded in Montevideo include mention of several crew members being paid off due to illness, desertions and many crew going absent without leave.

In volume 5, from 1912 to 1913, the bark voyaged between Sydney, England, Montevideo and Adelaide as recorded by mates A.C. Thompson and Brennan. The bark was renamed from HOWARD D. TROOP to ANNIE M. REID on July 18, 1912.

In volume 6, from 1913 to 1914, the ANNIE M. REID, now owned by San Francisco Mayor James Rolph, carried oil and wheat between New York, Australia, Callao and San Francisco under the command of Captain J.A. Durkee.

In volume 7, from 1914 to 1915, the ANNIE M. REID carried barley between Callao, San Francisco and Queenstown under Captain Durkee. Entries record changing to the U.S. Registry, the hoisting of the American flag and the crew refusing to serve under the U.S. Flag and wanting to be paid off. On March 11, 1915, the "boatswain was taken to jail for being a German."

In volume 8, from 1915 to 1916, the ANNIE M. REID sailed between Leith, New York, Melbourne and Newcastle under Captain Durkee. The first world war is documented in a number of these volumes. For example, on May 2, 1915, "4pm hove to for armed cruiser . . ."

In volume 9, from 1916 to 1917, the ANNIE M. REID carried coal, iron nitrate and case oil between New York, Australia, Chile and Port Angeles. This voyage had many notable incidents relating to injury on shipboard on January 18, 1917; storm and wave damage on January 8, 1917; and violence and drunkeness on board on December 11, 1916, January 26 and 29, 1917.

In volume 10, from 1917 to 1918, the ANNIE M. REID carried nitrate, coal, flour, paper and salmon between Chile, Canada, San Francisco and Australia as recorded by mate S.O . Jensen. The entry dated July 13, 1918 records that Mayor Rolph and his family came on board to wish everyone a pleasant and speedy voyage.

In volume 11, 1918, the ANNIE M. REID voyaged between San Francisco and Melbourne.

In volume 12, 1818 to 1819, the voyage on the ANNIE M. REID was recorded by mate R. MacKenzie between Melbourne, San Francisco and sydney carrying coal.

In volume 13, from 1919 to 1920, the ANNIE M. REID sailed between Sydney, Newcastle, Honolulu, San Francisco and Ipswich. Entries were recorded by mates MacKenzie and E. Garrad.

In volume 14, in 1920, the ANNIE M. REID, under Captain Durkee, sailed between San Francisco, Ipswich via the Panama Canal and Australia. Entries were recorded by mates A. Friedrickson and A.C. DeZiengi.

In volume 15, from 1920 to 1921, the ANNIE M. REID sailed between Newcastle, Chile, Hawaii and San Francisco as recorded by mate A.G. Zrenji.
