Administrative History and Project Background
The Getty Research Institute (GRI) is a program developed and overseen by the J. Paul Getty Trust. The GRI serves an international
community of scholars and the interested public through special collections of rare materials and digital resources. The GRI
creates and disseminates new knowledge through its active collecting program, public programs, institutional collaborations,
exhibitions, publications, digital services, and residential scholars program.
The GRI's Exhibitions department develops and designs exhibitions at the GRI and organizes events related to the exhibitions.
The GRI's Contemporary Programs and Research Department facilitated multidisciplinary programming related to architecture
and contemporary arts until July, 2009. At that time, as part of a larger restructuring of the GRI, Contemporary Programs
and Research merged with the Department of Architecture to form the Department of Architecture and Contemporary Art. The Department
of Architecture and Contemporary Art and its predecessors are/were responsible for the creation and oversight of the
Modern Art in Los Angeles and
Pacific Standard Time: Art in L.A. initiatives.
The
Modern Art in Los Angeles project is a series of public conversations sponsored by the GRI, dating back to 2003, in which leading artists, filmmakers,
musicians, curators, and critics discuss their contributions to Los Angeles' vibrant postwar (1945-1980) art scene. Much of
the research and product generated by the GRI's
Modern Art in Los Angeles activities were created by the same curators and art historians that were the driving force behind the Getty's larger initiative,
Pacific Standard Time: Art in L.A. This singular vision brought the efforts and products of both projects together.
Both projects strive to collect, document, and preserve the art historical records of Los Angeles from 1945 to 1980, but while
Modern Art in Los Angeles is an initiative specific to the Getty, the
Pacific Standard Time: Art in L.A. project is a broader, collaborative project with over 60 cultural institutions across Southern California. It includes exhibitions,
publications, lectures, symposia, performance art, theater, concerts, readings, and film screenings, as well as an extensive
series of oral history interviews. The J. Paul Getty Museum participated in the project by presenting a major exhibition from
2011 to 2012, titled
Crosscurrents in L.A.: Painting and Sculpture, 1950-1970, that surveyed postwar painting and sculpture in Los Angeles. Concurrent exhibitions were featured at over 30 additional venues
citywide, including the Getty Research Institute, which presented rich archival material from this historic period.
Administrative Information
Access Restrictions
Original recordings and duplication masters are restricted; use copies are available for use by qualified researchers.
Use copies exist for most audio and video recordings in this collection, however, the production of use copies may be required
for some materials before access can be granted and may add a delay to research requests. Advanced notice is required for
the production of use copies. Special handling and gloves are required for the handling of color photographs.
The following types of records are permanently closed: records containing personal information, records that compromise security
or operations, legal communications, legal work product, and records related to donors. The J. Paul Getty Trust reserves the
right to restrict access to any records held by the Institutional Archives.

Acquisition Information
Materials dating from 2003 to 2011 were originally transferred to the Getty Research Institute Special Collections holdings
by various departments in the Getty Research Institute. Materials dating from 2011/2012 forward were transferred directly
to the Institutional Archives' holdings by the Getty Research Institute Department of Architecture and Contemporary Art. In
2012 it was determined that material generated by
Modern Art in Los Angeles activities should be located in the same repository as material generated by the closely-related
Pacific Standard Time: Art in L.A.project; thus the material was brought together in the Institutional Archives.
Processing History
Some materials were originally processed by Special Collections staff prior to 2012. In 2012, when the materials were transferred
from Special Collections to Institutional Archives, the materials were processed by Samantha Guerrero, Cyndi Shein, Katie
Duvall and Emmabeth Nanol. The finding aid was created by Samantha Guerrero and Cyndi Shein in 2012. Katie Duvall arranged
and described additional accessions in 2013.
Accruals
Periodic additions to these materials are expected.
Technical Requirements
Please note that use copies of event recordings have been created over a period of time in a variety of formats. Some digital
media players are unable to recognize some CDs/DVDs. A cross-platform media player is recommended for listening/viewing use
copies that exist in CD or DVD format

(1 shared box and 3 enclosures)
Scope and Content Note
Materials principally comprise interviews with curators/art historians that were actively involved with the Getty's
Modern Art in Los Angeles and
Pacific Standard Time: Art in L.A. initiatives. These projects were sponsored by the Getty to locate, collect, document, and
preserve the art historical record of Los Angeles' vibrant postwar art scene. Between October 2011 and February 2012, a major
exhibition at the J. Paul Getty Museum,
Crosscurrents in L.A.: Painting and Sculpture, 1950-1970, presented a survey of postwar painting and sculpture in Los Angeles,
accompanied by a book that is at once an exhibition catalog and an overview of postwar art history in Southern California.
These interviews were conducted to provide short audio clips for public visitors to enjoy while they viewed corresponding
works in the exhibition.
Arrangement note
Materials are arranged alphabetically by title.
Access Information
Materials are open and available to qualified researchers. Use copies exist for most recordings. Original recordings and duplication
masters are restricted.
