Abstract: This collection is made up of 121 negatives of various sizes. The photograph locations encompass sites in San Diego, California and Baja California, Mexico. The San Diego locations are as follows: the Mesa Grande and Pala Indian Reservations, Warner Springs, Laguna Mountains, Pine Valley, Jacumba, Escondido, Oceanside, Imperial County, Balboa Park, and Anza-Borrego Desert State Park. The locations in Baja California include: El Rosario, Jatay, Laguna Salada, San Felipe, San Quintín, Santo Domingo, Santo Tomás, Sierra San Felipe, Sierra San Juarez, and Sierra San Pedro. The photographs are taken by eight different photographers including: Clinton G. Abbott, Edward H. Davis, Guy L. Fleming, Mrs. Marjorie Lee Guest, Laurence Markham Huey, F. W. Kelsey, W. S. Wright, and R. E. Vandruff.

Scope and Content

This collection is made up of 121 negatives of various sizes. The photograph locations encompass sites in San Diego, California and Baja California, Mexico. The San Diego locations are as follows: the Mesa Grande and Pala Indian Reservations, Warner Springs, Laguna Mountains, Pine Valley, Jacumba, Escondido, Oceanside, Imperial County, Balboa Park, and Anza-Borrego Desert State Park. The locations in Baja California include: El Rosario, Jatay, Laguna Salada, San Felipe, San Quintín, Santo Domingo, Santo Tomás, Sierra San Felipe, Sierra San Juarez, and Sierra San Pedro.
The subjects of the photographs include human figures, churches, burial sites, ruins of a few missions, houses and other structures, as wel as natural landscapes. The photographs are taken by eight different photographers including: Clinton G. Abbott, Edward H. Davis, Guy L. Fleming, Mrs. Marjorie Lee Guest, Laurence Markham Huey, F. W. Kelsey, W. S. Wright, and R. E. Vandruff.
The collection is made up of mostly copy negatives and prints with a few originals:

Background

Clinton G. Abbott (1881-1946) was the director of the San Diego Natural History Museum from 1922 until his death.Abbott was born to American parents in Liverpool, England. His early years were spent at schools in both North American and England. Abbott graduated from Columbia University in 1903, and developed a strong background in natural history and ornithology while briefly at Cornell for graduate work. Aboot's work, "The Home Life of the Osprey" was published in 1911, and by that time he had become well-known naturalist in the United States. Abbott joined what was theen known as the San Diego Society of Natural History in the 1920's as an educational assistant, and soon after became director, after the previous director, Howard Cleaves, left his position.
Edward H. Davis (1862-1951) was a field collector for the Museum of the American Indian in New York. He acquired many Native American artifacts from tribes in San Diego County, and Northern Mexico.
Guy L. Fleming was a fellow at the San Diego Society of Natural History, and along with Clinton G. Abbott, he submitted plans in 1928 to create the Anza-Borrego Desert State Park.
Laurence Markham Huey (1892-1963) was a curator for the Department of Birds and Mammals at the San Diego Natural History Museum for 38 years, from 1923-1961.
William S. Wright (1866-1933) was an amatuer entomologist who worked with the entomology collection at the San Diego Natural History Museum, starting in 1910; he became the Curator of insects in 1922.
